This wasn't what I expected -- and was an altogether better read for it.
Gargantuana's Ghost pulled me in with its alternating POV structure between Antoine Santiago, a soft-hearted New Yorker packaged in an intimidating frame (not unlike Gargantuana herself), and Charlotte, Gargantuana's childhood friend. There was a lot of heart in this story, with both protagonists mirroring each other in ways with their unreconciled grief and journey out of it. Oh, and I should mention some of the (very short) chapters are from Gargantuana's POV as well, which was a nice spice to blend into this story.
I'm quickly becoming a fan of Barb's speculative, human-element stories. I have yet to read one I haven't liked.
This is a great weekend afternoon read, and if it isn't clear enough, I certainly recommend it.
