It's not groundbreaking in any way, but what really stood out was the fact that it was drawn in ink and colored with watercolor. It is pretty beautiful.

Gipi is definitely shaping up as one of the most interesting of the current crop of European comics artists who are invading North America, which his enigmatic storylines and rough-but-controlled line work. [return][return]Garage Band is more straightforward (in terms of plot) than other Gipi works that I have read, but his characteristic use of a subtle watercolor palette is on full display. The story here is nothing deep or highly inventive, but it's told with an attention to detail and to character that is sometimes missing in comics. Gipi's protagonists are certainly not perfect, but they feel authentic and their story is an engaging one.

I randomly picked this graphic novel off the shelf, so didn't know what to expect. It is translated from the Italian, and while I am not sure I would suggest it to very many readers there are brilliant parts.
The boring story is of four boys who are in a band. They practice, meet girls, deal with their parents and are just some regular guys. I had trouble telling two of the boys apart and thought that the story was lacking. However, there are a few panels at the end of every chapter where they incorporate their stories into their songs and the illustrations of them singing and playing music are full of life, edgy and pretty awesome.

Although not as good as the astonishing [b:Notes For A War Story|35220|The Red Badge of Courage|Stephen Crane|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1168583277s/35220.jpg|2314709], [b:Garage Band|650722|Garage Band|Gipi|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1176751520s/650722.jpg|636858] is a simple, beautifully drawn story about a bunch of kids getting together to form a band, using a garage on of their parents has lent them to keep them out of trouble. As you can imagine, they whole keeping them out of trouble thing is not entirely effective.

I think Gipi's main strength is the way he appears to be able to build extremely strong characterisation into a few words and a couple of scribbles on the page. It takes a tiny period of time before you're in the minds of these people and wanting to hear more about their lives, so much of which seems to have taken place off the pages of the book.
