This is on the 2014 Monarch list.

At first I thought this would be a book only I'd like--it's about the power of books! and the awesomeness of libraries! and the ways reading can improve people's lives! But after only one reading, my preschool boys had many great things to say about it. My little one pointed out that the robber, who was given a book instead of silver, was reading under a tree on the next page. "He happy now," Orry said. Yup!

Cool that this is a true story, too.

Very nicely illustrated. Maybe for Grades 1-3. Would fit nicely into a unit about South America/Rainforest to offer a very different, much needed part of the picture.

The title of the book is what grabbed my attention (library donkey- how can you not?) and I'm really glad I found this. It's a wonderful story and full of heart and the love of books and the importance of reading. The illustration style is awesome and fits the South American story perfectly- it reminded me of the textile art/quilt style popular in the area. A delightful read and a nice way to take a peek into life in rural Colombia.

Okay librarians, if you are looking for a little reminder of why you choose this job, look no further. Very nice story, charming illustrations and a tribute to the importance of getting books into the hands of children.
