This was a nice, enjoyable read, and definitely better than I had imagined it to be. I was wary of this at first, mostly because I didn't want another Sherlock Holmes retelling, but that isn't at all what this book is. Yes, it makes references to the classic tale, and yes Rachel and James could fit (roughly) into Sherlock and Watson's shoes, but this novel is really refreshingly different.
I really liked the interactions between the two main characters, and with their other friends, too! The plot was interesting, with a great blend of mystery, action, and realistic drama - I liked that their whole lives didn't suddenly revolve around investigating a murder, that other, important things were happening in their lives at the same time. I also liked that the adults didn't take them 100% seriously (they are teens, after all) but were mostly willing to listen.
All in all, this was a well written novel, and I'd definitely be tempted to read further into the series, especially as they apparently only get better! A worthwhile read.

What I thought: There are so many Holmes-esque things out there these days - BBC's Sherlock, CBS's Elementary, the two Robert Downey Jnr. films, Anthony Horowitz's new Sherlock story - and now we have a Young Adult adaptation, which doesn't do too badly. Personally, I can't get enough of Sherlock Holmes and all the different adaptations out there, and now Ellie Marney's series can be adding to my list. Sure, some of it is quite unrealistic, but if you look past that, Every Breath is a really enjoyable story. Rachel Watts has moved from the country to the big city of Melbourne and despite the friends she's made, she doesn't like it at all. She longs to be back on her old farm, doing manual labour that would make any girl cry. James Mycroft is an eccentric genius, with a tragic past and throughout the book there is plenty of references to Holmes and Watson.
There adventure is full of danger and gruesome work, but the dynamic duo have their mind set on solving a murder case, and nothing can get in their way. Plus it must be easy work when you have a genius with amazing observational skills by your side.
James and Rachel's detective work is reasonable, and logical, and doesn't stretch the boundaries of realism too much. But my most favourite part of this story is the fact that Watts and Mycroft have a really strong attraction - about damn in my opinion! What's even better is Marney giving us a series of books rather than just a stand-alone, and I for one cannot wait!
The Good: The Watts/Mycroft romance trumped all for me!
The Bad: A few parts left me shaking my head, thinking that wouldn't really happen.
Rating: 4 bookstacks

A dear friend of mine once told me I only watch Sherlock because of Benedict Cumberbatch and I strongly disagreed. However now, am starting to think shes right. Am pretty sure this book is awesome. But it starts too slowly for me and am expected to wait for the addictive parts to kick in. Some day I promise to create some time and sit down for it properly giving it the proper attention it needs.

I really wasn't looking forward to this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed reading a book set somewhere other than America, and I found the characters intriguing. The plot moved forward at a steady pace and kept me guessing. Marney's writing is very descriptive and fluid. A fun and interesting read!
This reminds me of Trouble is a Friend of Mine by Stephanie Tromley. I’m not complaining.
It's so aussie and I love it so so much! Man these characters, the PLOT OMG (even though I called it very early I was still SO intrigued to see how it all unfolded).
The ending was not what I expected and I absolutely adored everything, it's just so Melbourne and everything I've ever wanted from a book.
“I'm only a genius with facts. I'm an academic genius and a social moron.'
'At least you admit to being a moron at something.'
'I admit to being a moron at lots of things. Being a moron in one or two areas serves to highlight my extraordinary brilliance in everything else.”
Murder Mystery Aussie YA what?! This book is amazing, seriously, absolutely, fantastically amazing!
Rachel Watts moved to Melbourne after her parents farm went under and is still adjusting to city life, not able to escape into a paddock or see stars her life's turned upside down. Watts has been home schooled/ taken distance education so her first year in public school is different but she's upto date educationally and does well in her classes. Quickly making friends with Mai, Gus, and Mycroft this foursome is one of my favourite friendships groups and it helps that Mycroft lives 2 doors down from her.
First things first it is a SHERLOCK retelling! Now I know the basics about Sherlock but I've never actually watched or read it 0.0 What have I been doing with myself you ask? Dw I thought the same thing upon loving this story.
After a homeless man is killed Watts and Mycroft search for answers and learn a lot about themselves in the process, the mystery is perfect, the plot is fast and intriguing, the characters are stella, and the family relationships are my favourite.
Watts is such a kick ass chick, I'm torn between wanting to be her and wanting to be part of her friendship group. The language is so Australian I could happily read this book over and over again and the romance! It's not in your face and getting in the way of the plot but man it's beautiful.
Mycroft is a genius in every sense of the world and Watts is in no way a sidekick. A tough kickass smart character who I just want to go ride dirt bikes with on the weekend.

Really can I ask for more?! I've decided to throw out my planned TBR (sorry review books) so I can binge read the whole trilogy BRING ON BOOK TWO!

This was a very refreshing read. I'm glad I picked it up randomly, because I finished it within a day.
I loved the characters and I'd be lying if I didn't enjoy the idea of it being set in my own city. It was nice to read about an Aussie household and know the lingo and street names. Won't be going to the zoo ever again though.
I highly recommend this book, a top book in my opinion. Not worth missing out on!
