My dad lended this to me because I’m going to Rome in a month. I probably wouldn’t have read this otherwise. In fact, I only knew it existed because of the trivia question, “What is the first appearance of the character Robert Langdon?” I vaguely planned on reading The DaVinci Code, only because it’s famous. When I heard they published a YA version, I was revolted (especially now that I’ve read this and found nothing that was too explicit to not be in a YA novel). So going in, I didn’t expect to be reading a new favorite.
This was a well written and engaging thriller, with just a few things that bugged me, ergo the three point five star. Vittoria, from the very first sentence she appears in, is just a reward for Langdon. She is constantly described sensually even when she is GRIEVING HER MURDERED FATHER. The introductory stuff also felt a little long winded. They literally make it to Rome on page 100 (I checked). I definitely would have liked it to have been sooner. Other than that, good pacing, super smart plot, and a clever “wait, it’s not over?” ending. I’ll read the DaVinci Code whenever I plan on going the Louvre (the adult version, thanks)!

I’m quite surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book - the mystery aspect intrigued me but I was hesitant about the amount of religious and historical references in it since I would not consider myself a religious person and so I’m not knowledgeable about the history of the Vatican. I found it highly exciting to read about and while I don’t typically find myself thinking “yeah right” at things that may seem impossible (the literal definition of fiction is a story of imaginary people and events), I found the ending a bit far-fetched and actually yelled out “yeah right!” in one specific area. Without spoiling the ending, those that have read it may know that I am talking about the aftermath of the helicopter scene. Other than that, which could be written off as “an act of God” as they mention in the book numerous times, the book was interesting from the start and full of twists (some expected, some entirely not).
