As an adult, who studied egyptology, I'm not the target audience for this.
How sad, since I enjoyed Percy Jackson.
But a book, for me, is determined by the characters and I just can't stand Sadie. Her sarkasm isn't cute, it's just verbal abuse. Carter is bland. The villain is boring. Most characters are clichée.
The plot ist basic and predictable.
The audio/epistolary format is annoying.
I'm not enjoying myself. This is a shallow read for kids and young teens. No need to think about anything in here, maybe race, but that's it.
It's very readable, though.

I quite enjoyed this, largely because I let myself be surprised by it and tried not to predict too much based on what I know of Riordan's writing. Having read PJO first I experienced flashes of similarities quite often throughout this novel, but all things considered, I think I enjoyed the first book of the Kane Chronicles more than The Lightening Thief. Perhaps it's the effect of a trilogy vs. a pentalogy, but this moves incredibly quick and feels a bit more fulfilling by the end. I have yet to finish the series, however, so I'll reserve final judgments until then.

Like the PJO series for Greek mythology, The Red Pyramid is a great way of learning a large amount of (the basics of) Egyptian mythology without making the learning itself too boring. The humor can get a bit juvenile at times (and the characters a bit irritatingly childish), but it is written for children, and the laughs never come at the expense of the story: Riordan knows when to crack a joke and when the characters require a moment of silence. There's a lot of heavy stuff in this book - familial death and loss, spiritual/mental possession, racial topics and discussion of black discrimination - and I like how it was all effortlessly made accessible to the kids reading.

The gods and historical figures in his universe, where relevant, are blended into the modern day world with contemporary clothing and titles. While some are harder to believe than others, it's still part of a pretty cool world he's set up, so I do look forward to the chance of meeting them again in the coming novels and seeing what adventures Carter and Sadie get up to in the future.

Englisch ist my 3rd language and I just can't stand Sadie's voice and her accent. I'll pick up the German print version tomorrow, because I want to keep reading, just not with this narrator.

I don't know how to justify loving a children's book series when I am 21 years old and almost a full adult, but whether it's nostalgia or the fact I never really grew up, I really love re-reading the first book in this series. I never read the rest of it because in middle school I thought I was too cool for this series (or something). But now, I fully acknowledge that I'm not to cool for anything, let alone a book series about Egyptian gods. I definitely will be reading the rest of the series, hopefully as fast as possible. Rick Riordan is a beautiful author and I very much regret nothing.
