There’s nothing I love more then when a book consistently makes me go “oh shit. oh shit.”

!!!!! WOW - I completely get the hype with the book and it’s absolutely a sci fi/fantasy staple. Admittedly it took about the first 150 pages to hook me but once it did I was in it. I’m not normally a fan of “multiple POVs” but this was very well done once I got into it. I appreciated the narrative this story wove and I loved and was saddened by Essuns character development. Really really looking forward to the next book.

Jemisin does it again. I inhaled the Inheritance Trilogy and just needed more. The Fifth Season didn’t have a single disappointing note. I was captivated through and through, and though I couldn’t necessarily relate to our protagonists

2...Really wanted to enjoy this novel, due to the reviews it has and it's genre, BUT I just couldn't get into! I finished but has not a one desire to read what happens next, even though we have pirates and new worlds...

Just shy of 5 stars as I wanted more action and this first book was very much focused on lore/world building. However, I have a strong feeling that books 2 and 3 will be 5 stars now that the groundwork is set.
