Missed some previous issues to know who some characters are...rather annoying.

Loved it. It has an extremely strong Civil War vibe to it but I don't mind the repeating themes and it is to be expected when the stakes are this high. I am particularly taken by the Illuminati and the extremes they are taking to save their universe. I particularly notice that all the brightest minds (Stark, Richards, Pym, Banner, Cho, McCoy) are part of this team, which makes their efforts seem the more thought out, but there is no easy solution to a collapsing multiverse.

In action stories where there are a dozen or so moving parts, a bunch of characters coming together to overcome a problem, be it superheroes, a group of bank robbers, a government and a group of scientists responding to an approaching meteor, there is a point in the film/tv series/comic book/novel where we transition from excessive narration, character beats, and introspection and we get down to the fistfights, shocking reveals, and denoument.

That's where we're at in Hickman's Avengers run.

We're eight months after the last part of the story, everything is changed and feels more urgent, but rather than really understand the changes, we just throw the characters into the action and see what happens.

And, naturally, there are chess references.

It sort of works here. I believe all the characters' motivations. I like the way the plot is unfolding, but it's The End Of The Marvel Universe, and I'm not emotionally involved in any way. There's too much logic and not enough pathos. It's like listening to someone talk about a hobby they love, and have them clinically reproduce a Wikipedia article on every possible aspect of their hobby, as opposed to listening to someone's engrossing story about the part of their hobby that they really love. Yea, I'm getting the information I was hoping for, but it's just ... flat.

Second to [b:The Manhattan Projects, Vol. 1: Science. Bad.|15736709|The Manhattan Projects, Vol. 1 Science. Bad.|Jonathan Hickman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1350317627l/15736709._SY75_.jpg|21420399], this might be the most disappointed I've been in Hickman's writing. Again, it's not terrible. It's not even technically bad, it's just unfulfilling given the scope of this story. If you're a fan of large cast epic tales, this still might be for you. I was just hoping there would be at least one storyline that engaged my emotions as much as it engages Hickman's knowlege of Marvel conitnuity.

I'm tired of this multiple world story. And I miss the part where even a little of this was coherent. The writing, what there is of it isn't bad. And the art is okay. But it reads like snippets of the larger story where the larger story isn't told anywhere. I would like it okay if the snippets were say full vignettes, but as it is it is kind of annoying. 2.5 of 5.

-slightly confusing beginning on why we're with these certain characters and not others
?? not sure I like some of the character changes due to a new artisit. Not bad, just different
++Ending was great though
++Doc and Namor talking so candid is wonderful
+Uncontrollable bad guys killing for sport...Namor has made a mistake
++Thanos new tribute to Professor X
-black panther section was kind of dull, minus madman
+Doom being smart
+Pod, everything is
+High stakes at the end of the issue
-still discovering what the illumaniti have been up to seems like a waste of a few pages, they're already rogue and Captain America knows...seems like a mute point right now
+Like that we get the other perspective of the infiltration that starts to clarify some of the confusion from the beginning of this volume
-smart dilagoue talk went on a bit too long for my taste
+Interesting the Cabal (specifically Terrax) talks to the world leaders painting themselves as kind of good guys? Odd but kinda cool.
+like the quick panels about Psylocke and X-Men when trying to connect doors about Captain Britain. Makes the world feel more connected.
++Freaking awesome Fantastic Four Double agent stuff...did not see that coming
++Overall a solid entry of a volume that is leading to the big event. I also like how complicated the relationships are becoming.

This was so choppy and all over the place that I feel like I need to go back and read each series issue-by-issue to understandand what happened here

When I picked this up from the library, I didn't know this was part of a much larger series (seriously why put volume one on the cover?) so I was extremely confused which may have impacted my enjoyment. And I don't know how I feel about huge ensemble comics yet. I might go back and read the others which will be a lot of effort obviously.
