Oh Matthew... My heart. Love him so much. Not sure if I recommend reading this before or after TLH. He does confess what happened in book 2 of TLH to one character specifically, so bc of that I'm not sure when it's better to read it.

This was truly unexpected. I do not know any English word that can describe what I felt when Matthew's sin is. It introduced us to The Last Hours, which I now can't wait to have in my hands. 5 stars because I truly didn't see that coming. I really really liked this one.

Not my favorite but interested to see where it fits in the overall story arc.

2020/2018 review:

2020 re-read: decided to read this again before getting into chain of gold, because i knew something important happened in this one but i couldn't remember what, and i'm happy i did (not saying you need to read this before chain of gold, obviously i haven't read it yet so i wouldn't know).

the only thing is that i am now worried about starting chain of gold, because what if it doesn't live up to this short story? chain of gold isn't written by queen sarah rees brennan, and i just don't know if cassandra clare understands these characters as well as sarah rees brennan does. i know they're technically her characters, but will anything she writes about them every fill me with the same love and despair as my absolute favorite character, my baby, matthew fairchild does in this story? we'll have to see.

original review:

sarah rees brennan co-wrote this, so it was obviously great (˶◕‿◕˶✿)

• matthew, james, christopher, and thomas has to be one of the weirdest friend groups i have read about, but you know what, i loved them
• this made me excited for the last hours! i was already kinda excited, but mostly in a general "oh yay another shadowhunter series", but now i'm actually excited because i like the characters!
• (sidenote - i know people think cassandra clare is beating a dead horse, but you know what? she enjos writing them. people enjoy reading them. people who don't enjoy them don't have to read them. cassandra clare makes money. nobody here loses, everybody wins! (and i don't mean "she makes money" in a condescending way, authors need money too, your favorite author isn't purely writing out of the goodness of their heart either).
• [i can't wait to see matthew be a tortured soul in the series. these boys were too happy. (hide spoiler)]
• it doesn't need to be said but i cried over jem again. [when he wanted tessa to tell him to stay... when he walked with will... how was i supposed to not cry? (hide spoiler)]
• this is very specific, but this contained one of my favorite "tropes", and i'm going to quote the scene because it's not very spoilery:
"I heard he was mad,” said Alastair, and let out a bark of laughter. “You’d have to be mad, to marry a creature with infernal blood and have children who were—”
“Don’t,” said little Thomas quietly. To everyone’s surprise, Alastair rolled his eyes and desisted.

i don't know how to describe this trope, but essentially: Character A is some kind of leader in a group, or a person who speaks their mind freely and loudly, and Character B is "less important", and nobody would expect Character A to listen to Character B, then when Character B speaks up against Character A, everyone expects Character A to react badly or not react at all, but instead Character A just shuts up, or stops doing whatever they're doing, and then everyone else is like ????¿¿¿¿¿ . (i swear this has happened in other media too, i'm not just making it up.) i don't know what the deal is between thomas and alastair, i am pretty much spoiler-free when it comes to the tlh characters, but i hope that there is some kind of relationship there (platonic or romantic. are they related?? it's hard to tell sometimes in these books. if they're related, just pretend i didn't mention romantic) and my favorite trope isn't leading me astray.
i don't know what else to say. i was going to give it four stars but the more i write about this the more i love it, so i'm giving it five stars instead.

This felt very slow to me and I wasn’t very interested in the story. Even though the pace picked up a little towards the end I’m struggling to understand why this novella was necassary. I don’t feel like it said very much, but perhaps it will be important in Shadowhunter novels to come.

Sad story, a sequel to the prequel and a story about the children of The Infernal Devices characters... It will probably make it easier to read the new trilogy that is bound to come out at the end of this year... If I have the strength and wish to keep reading stories from the Shadowhunter world. 🤔😶
