I really liked the history aspect, and the characterization of Jack and Miss Volker and their friendship. I found the addition of the murder plot distracting and felt like it...took away from some of the emotional gravitas. And I realize this book is comedic in tone, but deliberately re-framing how you've seen a lot of book unfold feels different than in general having a lighthearted, childish voice.
