I loved this book! It was really hard to put down, and I was so grateful that there was another Monster Haven book waiting for me.

Zoey is a wedding planner who gets up one morning to find her childhood closet monster having a cup of coffee and reading the paper at her kitchen table. It turns out that Zoey's knack for sensing feelings is more of a gift than she realized, and she finds herself opening her home and heart to the Hidden. Zoey's an authentic, snarky, heart-of-gold character--I want to be her best friend. The things she says and thinks have made me laugh out loud, literally, several times. Naquin's treatment of the supernatural and wordsmithing is impressive and compelling. I've been sneaking in extra pages when I'm cooking, walking across the street for books here at the library--whenever I can.

If you like the supernatural, humor, romance, I highly recommend this read.

It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I went in hoping for something lighthearted and fun and while I got the lightheartedness, I didn't get as much of the fun. Maybe it's where I'm getting older and my expectations are higher. Who knows.

Anyhow. This was alright as a time filler, but I probably won't be going back to pursue the series.

Part of me loved the idea of real life closet monsters, while the other part of me had little interest in a wedding planner and dead brides. I was in two minds about reading this book but I'm glad that I decided to give this one a chance.

Zoey is an empath and a wedding planner, which go together nicely when dealing with neurotic brides and obnoxious mothers. She is a fashion disaster and that drives her freakishly neat business partner Sara mad. Life takes a strange turn when the closet monster from her nightmares appears in her kitchen, making muffins and looking for somewhere to stay while he deals with his wife cheating on him with a bridge troll. This opens the floodgates to various creatures seeking her help.

Maurice is wonderful! He is kind, caring and is determined to protect and look after Zoey. It helps that he is the world's greatest and fastest cook! I would have loved to have a friend as loyal and caring as Maurice and he can move into my house anytime. The rest of the 'monster' cast are a lot of fun. We meet Iris, who is like a Sasquatch bodyguard-a lot of very funny scenes involve Iris! Molly and her brownie family are very sweet and she has a drunken abusive husband to deal with. Zoey has a friendly hag as her neighbour, the fairy version of Homeland security to protect her and a herbalist friend-Andrew-who can read auras. Andrew is a really nice guy and would be the perfect match for Zoey if he wasn't gay. His adorable pet fox Milo is one of my favourites in the book.

Zoey has her problems. A psycho incubus has become fixated with her and is seducing and murdering the women that Zoey has connections with, including her brides. It is up to Zoey, Andrew and Maurice to find a way to save these women and destroy the incubus. As if that wasn't enough, Zoey has to deal with her pathetic ex husband Brad who doesn't get the picture that being divorced for eight years entitles Zoey to have a life that he doesn't feature in. The scenes that he appears in are pretty funny. You really do want to give the guy a big slap.

There is a romance on the cards in the book but I confess that it left me pretty cold. Yes Riley was a nice enough guy with an interesting job but I felt there was no chemistry between him and Zoey. The book would have worked equally well without him. I felt as if he was just there to save Zoey when she got herself into trouble-something that Maurice was perfectly capable of doing, and with more personality! However the good part of him being a potential love interest was that it allowed Brad to spoil a date in a scene that was very funny and it was something that a lot of people can relate to.

My real niggle with the book was that it spent too much time on the details of the various weddings that Zoey was involved with. I wasn't really caring about fabric samples, bird seed decorations, colour schemes and bands. I found that a little boring in places but it doesn't really ruin the story. And Zoey is a bit on the dumb side when it comes to recognising who the incubus is targeting in her social circle! A few DUH moments for sure.

This book has a really good mixture of paranormal action, interesting creatures and good humour, which makes it a light and enjoyable read. I recommend this book to fans of cozy paranormal mysteries and those who like light urban fantasy.

3.5 stars!

I have really mixed feelings about this book. It was charming and creative, with enjoyable human and inhuman characters. But the incubus plot was nasty, dark, and rapey.

WHAT I LIKED
-------------
- Maurice may be one of my most favoritest supporting characters ever.
- The concept of the female lead attracting stray magical creatures was really fun.
- The horrid mother planning a wedding - loved to hate her.
- Kinda digging the reaper

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
-------------------
- Okay, this incubus thing. The whole book, the female lead is all "oh my god, he's killing my friends!!", when he's really RAPING and killing her friends. Yet, that rape part seems to completely escape her. She misses some *obvious* clues regarding trouble with her *best* friend. And she's not nearly horrified enough by the sexual violence she witnesses at the end of the book. I found all of this very troubling -- to me, it in essence felt like the raping was treated as "no big deal". I liked the rest of the book so much, I'm just not sure how to even get my head around this major inconsistency.

One-word review: fun.

To expand upon this: What a ridiculous amount of fun!

To explain: This is the tale of Zoey, an unusual lady who with her friend Sarah plans weddings for those lucky enough to find them. It doesn't really signify that Sarah is single and Zoey is divorced from the extremely clingy Brad (who just will not go away) – they're good at what they do.

As the description says, one night Zoey is wakened by the sound of someone in her house, and discovers her intruder is not entirely a stranger. Strange, yes; stranger, no. It's the monster who scared the daylights out of her by peering from her closet when she was five. He didn't mean to frighten her, Maurice tells her now; it was all a misunderstanding. Now – sit-sit-sit! – he makes her coffee and the most amazing muffins and begins to try to help her understand that her ability to know what those around her are feeling isn't, as she's always assumed, is not something everyone can do.

Things become stranger for her from there. Maurice has come to her for help because he knows she shares the ability her mother had, the talent for helping others that made Zoey's mother a heroine among fairies. And so begins Zoey's rise as her mother's successor, and before long she is rubbing elbows with brownies, fairies, and a small dragon… Not to mention the local herbalist and his atypical pet. And the paramedic who isn't exactly what he seems.

Oh – and the succubus. Forgetting the succubus would be for Zoey hazardous to her health. Not just for Zoey – for all the women in her life. She has, apparently, due to her abilities, a special flavor, a savor unlike ordinary mortals. Some, less subtle demons, would just visit Zoey and suck her dry – but not this one. He's cleverer than that – that would be killing the egg-laying goose. Come to find out, every woman on whom she has – intentionally or un- - used her gift carries away a tinge of that flavor of hers, and the connoisseur succubus is tracking down these women and consuming them. And it's up to Zoey to stop him.

I love that Zoey never realized how unique she is – she has gone her whole life assuming everyone can tell what those around them are feeling. How else can people communicate? Once she works her way through the reality (that's why people don't communicate very well), she has to rethink almost everything she does every day. She has always been able to soothe ruffled feathers, and find a way to make people happier, and to tell if someone was lying to her or had her best interests at heart. And now she has to make up her mind about whether this is as it should be, or does she have the right to manipulate others' emotions, now that she knows what she's doing?

The characters are lovely, the whole concept is just a hoot, and I am very, very happy that this will be a series. (Number two in March! Hurrah.)

Opening Sentence -
Of all the possible weapons I might have grabbed, I chose a toilet brush....

Review -

I received this book from Netgalley to read and review.

The story starts off with Zoey waking up to sounds in the kitchen, she grabs a toilet brush and rushes in to find the monster from the closet when she was five years old. He pushes her into a seat at the table and servers her fresh orangestrawberry muffins (totally made me want to make some and still might) He explains how sorry he is to have scared her 23 years ago he thought they were playing a game that's why he had been smiling. He explains that he was 8 and her mom had taken him in but he was supposed to stay in the hall closet but her closet had all the fun toys including the easy bake over. He tell's her that her mom found him a new home, he grew up married a gargoyle but she kicked him out and he had nowhere else to go and since her mom had helped him he came to her. The unique pair instantly forms a connection over muffins and coffee.

Zoey is a wedding coordinator but she's also a magnet for the super needy, she draws them to her and can't help but bend over backwards to help them. Hence she can't get rid of her ex hubby who she happens to have been divorced from for eight years. I love that she's the super nice girl that everyone wants to love, and loves to help people even if it's no benefit to herself. She also has a very unique fashion taste too.

Zoey bumps into a incubus who marks her as his and uses her to as a link to kill the woman she's helped. Soon her brides start turning up dead and it's time for Zoey to put a end to the incubus. Along the way to stopping the incubus she learns a lot about herself, that she has the power to control the emotions, and can use them to help people in a new way. She also makes many new friends in addition to the closet monster, she helps out a sick dragon, takes in a small family of brownies on the run from a abusive father, as well as others. She learns that her mother was a healer who helped the hidden as they are called.

Monster in my Closet has it all, suspense, romance, growth for the character. I couldn't put it down it sucked me in from the start which is what I love about a book. I had to know more about Zoey, she was always in the back of my mind when I wasn't reading. I love the descriptions of the characters I had a good idea exactly what they looked like which was a plus. I feel that the characters in the book especially Zoey are well written, we see Zoey grow as a character. I can easily see myself picking up this book and reading it again. I plan on purchasing a copy for my sister when it comes out. A very entertaining book, kept me wanting more. I really hope that this book turns into a series. The setting of the story just touches on the world that I found interesting.

Scene -

The doorbell rang.

I reacted the way any normal person would. I went to answer it. My hand was on the doorknob before I realized there shouldn't be anyone at my door. No one would have been able to make it through the security posted outside. Getting as far as the front step should of been impossible.

I glanced at the doorway to the kitchen and saw Maurice look out, then duck his head. I shrugged. If Maurice wasn't worried, I shouldn't be. I turned the knob and opened the door.

Riley was standing on my doorstep, holding a bouquet of flowers.

I was stunned for a moment and stood there like a idiot my jaw slack.

"Can I come in?" he asked

I looked out over his shoulder at the darkness behind him.

Iris was out in the yard, leaning against a tree. He shrugged at me and held his furry palms up, as if to show his inability to stop this particular intruder. "How the hell did you get in? I asked

Riley smiled and shoved the flowers in my hands. "Doesn't matter how good your security is. Nobody can stop Death."

I give this book 5 of 5 it met all my expectations and then some.

I wasn't sure about this one at first, not least because the main character is a wedding planner, but it turned out to be a great book, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out.

When you read a certain genre, every once in a while you need a break. Because let's be honest no matter the genre, there are certain character molds that the leads just have to follow. So when you read a lot of Urban Fantasy you tend to get kickass females, with big mouths, witty one liners, anger issues, and trust issues. Enter Zoey. A nice change of pace from the standard UF heroine.

She's an Empath, someone who can pick up on other peoples emotions and even manipulate them, and she just found out. Not only did she find out she’s an Empath, but that other people can't feel emotions like she can! On the same day that her childhood monster in the closet comes back to live with her—his wife and him are going through a rough patch—an incubus decides that she is the perfect meal. Zoey soon finds out he can feed off of anyone that she's had contact with and left a mark on with her Empathic gifts. It's too much for a simple wedding planner to deal with!

From there this book is a pretty awesome ride of crazy. From Zoey's colorful and unique outfits—that hauntingly remind me of my own wardrobe—to all of the fun paranormal creatures that step out of the wood work. They're the Hidden, and Zoey's finds out her mother use to help them out. Now Zoey is running a kind of halfway house for them. The intriguing thing is that Zoey has no real memories of her mother and the magical things from the past, and this is a tasty mystery that is dangled like a carrot above the readers metaphorical brain-mouth.

Which is a good thing because I found the whole Incubus pot line . . . well dull. We know who's doing the killing, it's glaringly obvious that he would attack Zoey's closet friend--which doesn't even occur to her. Incubus makes dream appearances. Check. Kills people in contact with her. Check. Yet the police never wonder about the connection, supposing it's natural causes. (Young healthy woman suddenly dying, with one glaringly obvious connection. Really how can we think so little of the police?) There was an emotional lapse of how I felt Zoey should have reacted to her friend basically being raped by an incubus, good people dying, and the other horrors. It just felt underplayed.

What I did like was how Zoey decided that she would have to stand up to the incubus and save lives. There was a little "if I die then he has to go back" that was played around with, but it felt like too much after the lack of emotion from other events. There's teasing glimpses of the demon realm and it's rules, the laws of death and how it works, and a whole crazy world to pull out of Naquin's head.

The character interactions were wonderful! From Zoey's new family of "monsters" to how she suddenly starts interacting with the world once she realizes she is an Empath. It's very realistic. There's heat from her ex-fiancés of eight years, and I'm hoping he gets some serious smack down. A yummy reaper named Riley, that just riles me up. (So sue me I went there.) An overlaying giant mystery of what happened to Zoey's mother, and her missing memories. It's nice to have a strong leading lady, but one who isn't the stereotype of the genre. We all need a break, and with the awesome coo-coo-ness found here, why not give it a twirl.

Sexual Content: Nothing overly graphic, woman are dying from sex though. While it’s not the brutality of rape, it is nonconsensual none the less.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it
