I hadn't read any of The Expanse short fiction before this, so I'm pleased to see it compiled into an anthology! After Drive, the novellas are in publication order. Reading them in between books would've preserved some surprises, but coming to it after reading the main series feels like finding bonus episodes of characters, and now I have no more new Expanse to look forward to, alas. I really enjoyed how the novellas let the authors experiment with writing style (as the authors notes for The Churn indicates, The Churn is third person omniscient and The Vital Abyss is first person).
Jefferson Mays is one of my favorite narrators, now. He's so good at capturing different characters in different states of being, hissing words out as someone's being choked, slurring them when someone's gotten into some homebrewed gin, shifting gears between characters. His voices helped me clock who someone was before the textural evidence appeared in some cases, but that comes with the territory of the medium. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck also appear, reading their authors notes after each short work.
Drive- short story, and shortest piece of fiction. Some nice worldbuilding for the time between us and when the books start.
The Butcher of Anderson Station- I liked it, reminded me of how great Fred Johnson and Anderson Dawes are as characters.
Gods of Risk- probably my least favorite. It was alright, but I didn't latch onto the details as much here.
The Churn- ooh. This one I've been wanting to get to for years, especially after hearing how Wes Chatham really took this one apart to determine how to best embody his character. Did not disappoint. Second favorite, I think.
The Vital Abyss- Likely my favorite of the collection, because I enjoy the scientific aspect of the protomolecule, and this was a fascinating viewpoint character to get behind. I also kept picturing The Room as the dormitory/cell space from Squid Game because of how it was described...
Strange Dogs- plays out how it was depicted in the show's final season (which was a surprise to me when it aired- oh! that's Cara and Xan! serving as a helpful indicator of how much time passes in the skip between books six and seven)
Auberon- the return of a side character, and a what if? alternative path for Laconian governors.
The Sins of Our Fathers- also a long awaited return, answering, "What next?" after the events of the final book strand people in places. I really liked this one too.

Ta książka w żaden sposób nie wpłynęła na moje dotychczasowe odczucia odnośnie serii. Czyli jest okej, ale bez szału. Zazwyczaj trudno jest mi się zaangażować w zbiory opowiadań. Zdecydowanie preferuję formę powieści. W tym przypadku dochodzi jeszcze kwestia tego, że większość tych opowiadań działałaby o wiele lepiej, gdyby czytało się je zgodnie z chronologią wydarzeń i taki sposób ich przyswojenia osobiście polecam. Chociaż może to już moje własne skrzywienie i na siłę szukam powodu, z którego trochę się nudziłem.
Najfajniejsze było chyba ostatnie opowiadanie. Bardzo lubię takie klimaty kosmicznej kolonii gatunkowo na pograniczu survivalu. Tutaj to było bardzo skromnie zarysowane, ale wystarczyło, żebym się wciągnął. Ogólnie jeśli miałbym za coś pochwalić autorów, to niezła wszechstronność gatunkowa, jaką tutaj prezentują. Opowiadania są różne, nawet jeśli nie zawsze szczególnie interesujące.
Wygląda na to, że to moje ostatni kontakt z serią Expanse. Kilka końcowych przemyśleń - Jeśli trafił na tą opinię ktoś, kto zastanawia się nad zaczęciem serialu, albo książek i z jakiegoś powodu może wybrać tylko jedno, to polecam wybrać serial. Wiem, że to może być kontrowersyjna opinia, zwłaszcza ostatnio, kiedy kwestia adaptacji jest bardzo... drażliwa. Ale serial Expanse to prawdopodobnie najwierniejsza adaptacja jaką kiedykolwiek widziałem. Powiem nawet więcej - uważam, że jest lepszy od książek. Autorzy serii są również scenarzystami i producentami serialu, i szokująco okazuje się, że wiedzą lepiej co jest dobre dla ich dzieła niż losowi "artyści" pokroju Rafe Judkinsa, Lauren Hissrich, czy kto tam jest showrunnerem Rings of Power. Nie dość, że serial to w 90% przełożenie książek na ekran 1:1, to zmiany, które robią, autentycznie wychodzą historii na plus. Twist postaci Ashforda z kręcącego wąsikiem szaleńca na jedną z najlepszych i być może najbardziej ikonicznych postaci serialu, czy chociażby postać Drummer, która w książkach to w zasadzie nawet nie postać 3 planowa. Szczerze można traktować książki jako pierwszy draft historii, która i tak już jest mocno filmowa, a serial jako wersję po końcowych szlifach. Są jedynie 2 minusy. Pierwszy to dosyć drastyczna fabularna zmiana pod koniec serii. Bardzo wymuszona i czuć to, chociaż rozumiem jej powody. Druga, to że serial nigdy nie zostanie ukończony. Zakończył się na 6 tomie, który można poniekąd traktować jako soft zakończenie. Następne 3 książki dzieją się kilkadziesiąt lat później i uważam, że są to 3 najlepsze książki w całej serii... Ale dzięki temu, że serial jest tak wierny pierwowzorowi, po zakończeniu serialu można bez większych przeszkód wskoczyć do 7 tomu i w tej formie dokończyć historię. Cheers :)
