I really enjoyed the first 1/3 of the book, but once Jane started working as a governess for Mr. Thornfield it rather lost me. I really did like Jane Steele quite a lot and wished the story had retained the urgency of the first part. I loved young Jane fighting to survive and thrive at school and in London, but governess Jane's story was a bit of a bore.

Some reviewers felt that the end of the book lagged but I did not agree. I was captivated from start to finish. It was beautifully written and clever and I was kept guessing throughout. This would've been a five-star read for me but the murder aspect left me squirmy.

My daughter loves this book with a great love, but I’ve tried it twice now and I just can’t get into it. Not sure what the problem is. I read 3-4 chapters and then flipped over and read the last 50 pages. I guess it’s just not for me.

I wish I could say I loved this for it's connection to Jane Eyre, but that was the last reason I loved it. I mean, I did love it because of that, but I have far better reasons to love it. We have a narrator with true moral complexity. We have a woman who do what is necessary to protect herself and those she loves. We have her willing to dislike parts of herself, but still be able to both love herself and love others. We have her open to accepting others for who they are rather than what they look like or where they come from. On top of that readers get to learn about the Punjab wars between the Sikhs and the East India Company. Complicated morality questions are asked of characters (and the readers) with no answer being given. Oh and there is a mystery, murders, and romance. This may not be for fans of Jane Eyre, but this is for fans of Sherlock Holmes and for those who have a passion for historical fiction from the period.
