The pacing was a little weird but I liked this enough to continue the series

A fun romp. A little too fast, it could have been 2 books easily which would have given us more time in each adventure and with each character, but it was a fun, easy read overall.

Eva has her own ship and a crew she gets along with. They don't always make a lot of money but they're doing honest work. The current cargo of psychic cats is a bit of an annoyance, but it's a living. This peaceful-ish life is about to get interrupted by a horrifying encrypted call – her sister has been taking by the crime syndicate known as The Fridge. They want Eva to go back to her old ways, forcing her and her crew to take on less than legal, dangerous work. Also, Eva can't tell her crew about the blackmail situation. So...yeah…

If you've ever played any scifi video game, you will likely recognize parts of them in this book (especially one particular title, you'll know which one if you know it). That said, I think this expy-ing of character concepts is fully positive. I had a blast reading this story and I'm looking forward to reading book 2 & 3 soon!

Pick this up if you're looking for space adventures, xenoromance, and characters with less than stellar pasts who're trying to do better, along with big found family focus.
