No matter how many times I read it, Gemina never ceases to amaze me. Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff's abilities to foreshadow, create lovable characters, create truly hatable characters, delve into science as well as science fiction, and keep every single detail straight while doing it are completely unmatched.

It's always a gamble when you're talking about a second book in a series with completely different characters. For many readers, including myself, the characters are one of the driving factors that get me to pick up a book.

Having fallen in love with Kady, Ezra, and AIDAN, I was shocked to find that I was immediately as drawn into Gemina as I had been to Illuminae, despite the completely new cast of characters.

The Illuminae Files will forever be one of my favorite series.

Tore through the book. I loved the first one, though it set an impossible standard to follow. This is still a great book. The action is intense, the stakes are high and it's overall a very immersive experience to read.

I saw a lot more of the twists coming this time, but that can also be satisfying. And overall it was a fascinating read, I feel like I learned something new.

I can't believe this series. Just when I thought "meh, this isn't as good as the first one, it's not as twisty" I get a huge twist thrown at me.

"good luck, hannah donnelly. the universe itself depends on you. ...no pressure."

i didn't like this one as much as i liked illuminae, but hannah and nik have quickly made their way into my favorite battle couples of all time. right next to kady and ezra and AIDAN, in fact. huh. funny how that works out.

best character is by far ella. sorry AIDAN, still love you more than anything, but i love me a sassy hacker genius. she and hannah and nik are the girlbosses of all time.

all in all, gemina is definitely an excellent follow-up to illuminae. can't wait to get my hands on obsidio!

(once again, heed the content warnings. this one's just as violent as the first, now with added drug use.)

'and waiting for her on the other side? just like he promised.

'a whole sky of different stars.'

Overall loved the illuminae files #2. Just a few points where I feel like characters made pop culture references that would be irrelevant in their time, and I thought it was too bad that end had no suspense, we found out the conclusion of Gemina immidiately after. But hey, overall very enjoyable.

Giving this three stars hurt me, so I didn't. It was still intriguing and drew me in, but it was almost the same formula as the first one: BeiTech attacking with an non-human secondary threat. But still good.
