Mortana, genannt Tana, muss vielen Ansprüchen gerecht werden: Praktiziere nur niedere Magie um den Menschen auf dem Festland keine Angst einzujagen, gib einmal im Monat deine hohe Magie mit der Erupta ans Meer ab und heirate den Sohn des Gouverneurs zum Schutz aller Hexen.
All dies tut Tana voller Pflichtbewusstsein, bis sie eines nachts die Zeremonie der Erupta verpasst und ein großes Problem hat: Zu viel Magie mit der sie nicht umzugehen weiß. In der selben Nacht trifft sie Wolfe, der trotz Verbot hohe Magie praktiziert und ihr seine Hilfe anbietet.
Uns so gerät alles ins Wanken, woran Tana bisher fest geglaubt hat...

"Bring me your Midnight" ist ein Buch voller Gegensätze und bringt eine einzigartige Atmosphäre mit sich. Tanas Leben auf der Insel vs ihre Zukunft auf dem Festland, die zerstörerische Wirkung der Erupta, die gleichzeitig die Hexen schützt, Magie bei Tag und bei Nacht, Pflichten und Wünsche...

Das Buch hat mir "Mulan" - Vibes gegeben. Die Pflicht, der Familie und den anderen Hexen Ehre und Schutz zukommen zu lassen; der Wunsch, seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen. Und die Lügen, in die man sich dabei verstrickt und die einen irgendwann einholen. Tanas innerer Zwiespalt, inmitten all dieser Gegensätze ihre Position zu finden und dafür einzutreten, konnte ich nachvollziehen und ihre innere Anspannung hat sich auf mich übertragen.

Besonders interessant fand ich die Verbindung von Magie und Natur, insbesondere dem Meer.

Tanas Beziehungen zu ihren Eltern, ihrer besten Freundin Ivy, Landon und Wolfe waren allesamt nachvollziehbar und realistisch. Insbesondere die Reibereien zwischen Mutter und Tochter kamen mit bekannt vor.

Trotz allen guten Punkten war das Buch so wie der Vorgänger "Wild is the Witch" an einigen Stellen etwas langatmig und ich habe etwas gebraucht, um hineinzufinden.

Freunden von Coming - of - Age Geschichten und Magie kann ich dieses Buch aber uneingeschränkt empfehlen

I really enjoyed this one! This story features witch covens, forbidden love, arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers, politics, betrayal, secrets, self-discovery, and an interesting magic system rooted in nature. It is YA and full of angst and longing.

This book is beautifully written and deeply atmospheric! If you like Adrienne Young’s books, you’ll probably like this one as it has a similar feel (especially if you were a fan of Spells For Forgetting since this one has somewhat similar vibes as far as the witchy island with small-town secrets).

I really enjoyed Tana’s journey of growth and self-discovery and thought her relationship with Wolfe was sweet. I really liked both of their characters. I had mixed feelings about some of the supporting characters, however. In particular, her family and best friend were a bit hard to like at times. Though, these complicated and complex relationships did add to the story.

My only complaints were that I thought the world-building could’ve been more developed; though, I’ll acknowledge that this can be tough to do in a standalone. To be fair, it did seem thorough enough for the purpose of the story. I also didn’t fully understand the rules and limits to the magic system (for example, it’s tied to nature/the elements but it can also apply makeup?). I also would’ve appreciated a bit more resolution at the end and think it could’ve benefitted from a more thorough epilogue. For example, how did things proceed with the alliance with the mainland? How did things go with the proposed solution to address the currents? Etc.
