...another weird but interesting book.

Circle of Bones was well.. an interesting book. In it, you will meet Maggie. She's a former marine.. and I honestly have no idea what the hell her job was now.. After a tragic accident, she's decided to sail around the Carribean. Now, that sounds like heaven.. but I wouldn't do that on my own - mostly because I have no idea how to sail.

Well, along the way she runs into a naked man swimming. Again, heaven. Cole, the naked guy living life, is apparently a treasure hunter. He was funny because he sounded so god damn crazy. I honestly have no idea what I would do if I were in her position.. but I probably would've been laughing so hard. You also meet another guy named Diggory, and I was just kind of confused about his whole part. A lot of things confused me in this book.

Now these two had some kind of adventure. It was confusing but highly entertaining at the same time. If it didn't have so many loose ends in it, I probably would've liked it a lot more. The secret society that Dig was in was an interesting twist.. but at the same time, I also didn't really care about it. I have no idea what the next book will bring me, or my buddy, but I hope we like it a bit better than this one!

I enjoyed Christine's Kling's other series, Seychelle Sullivan. This book is different from that series but I still enjoyed it. This one is more of an adventure novel. I enjoy reading about the sailing, the Caribbean and the diving. These characters are rough around edges searching for treasure. There are lots of twists and turns and some surprises. This is a quick read that keep you turning the pages. Enjoy

I mainly got this book because I won the second book in this series through Goodreads Giveaway. I can't just read the books out of order I have the purchase the first one in the series. At first I didn't think I was going to like the book. It doesn't seem to be my style. I started to read it anyway because I wanted to read the second one so I can write a review since that would by why Goodreads (or the people doing the giveaway) gives books away for publicity of said book.

I am not the fastest reader. I love reading but for me to just sit there and read a book continuously it has to be amazing. Most books that I read don't do that for me. I will read a chapter and once there is a stopping point I will stop and go do something else. I at least try to read a chapter before bed or until I am falling asleep. On that note this book actually took me less than a month to read. It kept me entertained enough for me to read more at a time. It wasn't the best book I have ever read and I probably won't ever read it again.

I would give this a 3 1/2 star rating if Goodreads would let me. Not quite 4 stars but still a little bit better than a 3 star book.

When you start this one, be sure to have time to get into it. The start of the book keeps flipping between various people and time, it was hard to keep straight what was happening and how things related. Then once it got going it clicked and turned into a really great book. It's the first in a series and i'm hoping the next book keeps the same characters.

Trigger warnings: war, death of a sibling (in the past), murder, slut shaming, racial slurs, ableist slurs, rape threats,
Spoilerdeath of a parent, explosions, presumed death of a love interest

The submarine plot and the code breaking stuff was compelling. The rest of this was kind of a shitshow. So here's the thing: the idea of this was pretty great. I was hoping for a Clive Cussler type deal with more romance. Uuuuuuuuuunfortunately, while I enjoyed the parts set in the 1940s, the rest of it was just...bleh.

There was a truly unnecessary amount of racism and misogyny, including this gem of a quote about an African-American character: "Even at such a distance, he could see her animal sexuality. It was common in her kind."

Add in the fact that
Spoilerthe main character hooks up with the love interest for the first time literally hours after witnessing her father's murder, discovering that her ex is a murderer, AND discovering that her father was responsible for her brother's death a decade earlier
and I spent a lot of time making grossed out faces while reading this.

Circle of Bones spins a tale that dives back into the past while living securely in the present, with the Caribbean as a lush tropical backdrop.

Mostly when I read fiction that involves sailing, it is either too dull, too overly dramatic, or just doesn't sound right to my sailor's ear. Christine Kling has done a fantastic job of creating an authentic story that takes place on boats. The sailing details aren't overdone, and she even places her characters on powerboats as necessary, to get them places a little faster. :)

Speaking of characters, Maggie Riley is my new favorite fictional female. She's tough, stubborn, able to take care of herself, and yet able to fall in love with the right (and the wrong) guy.

Anyone who enjoys thrillers or maritime history will enjoy this. Anyone who cares about boats (especially sailboats) will probably be adding it to their list of all time favorites, like me.

This conspiracy thriller squanders a potentially interesting premise with a wildly implausible plot, buffoonish henchmen, cardboard characters, and a whole mess of contrivances, up to and including deus ex volcano. It might make a decent action film, but I didn't find it good reading.

Parts were good, others were not and sadly it wasn't able to hold my attention for very long.

The writing was better than I've seen in the past for a free e-book. It read a bit more like a screen play than a book in someways. Title is kind of disconnected from the story.
