I found the viewpoint character off-putting, and so didn't really engage as much with the story as I might have.

I like the novella form. I have now read 2 of 'The Wisdom Tree', which is 5 novellas. I don't know yet whether there is a connection between the stories. This was very good, and I think I liked [b:Juneau: Wisdom Tree 4|30654762|Juneau Wisdom Tree 4|Nick Earls|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1466426002s/30654762.jpg|51199794] even more.

This is an inspired idea. 5 linked novellas, one released each month from May to September this year.

Volume one is Gotham, a story about a music journalist who travels to New York, ostensibly to interview an up and coming hip hop artist. What appears to be an entertaining but relatively straightforward tale of celebrity is imbued with a whole new meaning when we reach the last 30 pages.

I'd kind of lost faith in Earls over his last few releases but this is the voice that I fell in love with 20 years ago. Masterful.
