I was recommended this book by a friend. I never read blurbs/descriptions of books she recommends because 9/10 they’re golden! This is no exception to that rule.
This book transcends all the author was trying to capture. IF you read this book, PLEASE read the authors note at the end. I feel like that is the most IMPORTANT part of her work.
Take My Hand takes place directly after the ruling of Roe V Wade when post-segregation and the Tuskegee Experiment were still topics of discussion. It was a profound time for our nation and a pivoting point for our right as citizens. The author wrote delicately on the acts of racism and prejudice in a time when they were fighting for their rights. It is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
Reproductive rights were violated without any precautions against poor women and young girls in our nation. Yes, I said young girls. Civil, the FMC, became a whistleblower for two children (11- & 13-year-old females) that were wronged by our health system. She takes it on herself to make things right. Little does she know this was happening to women and young girls, everywhere. The atrocities that happen to them seem outlandish or fictional but read the description it is based on true events. If I could give this book a standing ovation I would. Sadly, I can see someone trying to get it banned. All I want to do is cry for the women and children victimized by what other’s deem correct behavior.
