If one is lucky, one has an escape, a place, person, or activity, one can retreat to at any time. Sometimes, this safe haven is found in the companionship of one (special) gray cat. How My Cat Saved My Life and Other Poems is a love story and history of Juliette Sebock and her cat, Fitz's, heartfelt (and continuing) relationship.

The observations of Fitz during his integration into the Sebock family is painted with the underpinnings of a tumultuous personal life for Sebock herself. Despite the slivers of doubt she shares about depression or her 'lack of a real job,' Fitz remains a reliable companion to Sebock. He accomplishes this in a simple, yet beautiful way: by being there. From the very beginning, Sebock shares honestly just how much Fitz's presence impacted her: "he stayed & he mostly stayed well, & he mostly seemed to love me & sure, we kind of rescued Fitz; but, really, he saved me."

It is this unconditional display of love that allows pet owner's to feel such an attachment to their pet (I also have a long name, so I find myself feeling an additional sense of closeness and appreciation for Varjack Fitzgerald Fergus Sebock.) It is the genuine, pure love that Sebock and Fitz share that makes this collection so charming. Whether you have a cat or not, this collection is for all the animal lovers who understands the importance and strength of the bond between a person and their pet.
