My first book by this author and it took me completely by surprise. A narration of essays about the impact of music through both a personal and sociopolitical lens’s from the words of an obvious poet.

Raw, poignant and insightful. There were literal moments where I felt in awe of what I was listening to. This is the type of writer I aspire to be.

And on a more personal level that added to my enjoyment was the variety of artists in which were discussed from a fellow avid show lover. Abdurraqib discuses artists from My chemical romance, schoolboy q, the wonder years, atmosphere, Nina Simone, future and more.

I highly recommend listening to it as it’s read by the author. It was very easy to get engrossed in which is why I only listened to it in bigger chunks spaced between a couple of days. Going to read/listen to everything by him now.

Fantastic.

Favorite piece was on Prince - Ive rewatched that halftime show a million times.

Everything Hanif Abdurraqib writes is five stars. Period.
