I loved every inch of this book.
Legit some of the best pop-culture essays I've read in a while. Tore through this book in a day because I kept wanting to read just one more.
The best review of this book I could write would simply echo the effusive praise contained in the introduction (penned by Eve L. Ewing). Abqurraqib somehow consistently knows how to articulate the outline of the relationship between your emotions and a range of songs, albums, and artists spanning decades and across genres. He is somehow able to take that intimacy and expand it into the wider sociological context of history, not tell to you _why_ you feel the way you do, but to help you understand why it's important, why _this song_ in _this moment_ might have hit deeper than any other track this artist will every write.

I love Hanif on life-through-basketball and on Black performance, but I may love Hanif on life-through-music most of all. Truly treasured this book. I look to him for his wisdom and 10/10 music taste.

I didn't know anything about this book except for the fact it had a cool cover and a great title. This turned out to be one of the greatest reading experiences I've ever had and I say this as someone that does not have such a conscious attachment to music as an art form.
