Hanif’s writing is unmatched. In one sentence, he can turn a smile into tears and back again. These essays are a masterclass in writing from the heart.

I really loved this book of essays. It can be hard to find a collection like this, where I never felt like an essay was dragging or pushing through a overblown analogy. They are as long or as short as they need to be with a good range of topics. I find myself referring to these essays daily, keeping in mind that the author who spoke about the difference between fireworks and gun shots is the same one singing praises about his favorite My Chemical Romance album.

While not my favorite from Abdurraqib this is still excellent. His joy and passion comes through in each essay, covering race, music, friends, life. There are many artists that I don’t know and it didn’t detract from my enjoyment, but I don’t think those essays will stick with me as much as the ones I have more of a connection to. He is one of my favorite thinkers and I still believe he gives the best criticism. Always happy to read his work.

I'd like to take my time with this but unfortunately I have to return it to the library. I may continue later if I can get it again but the waiting list for it is months long!

Individual stories, almost all based on music, that uncover deeper meaning. Identity, childhood, loss. My favorites include chapters on Fleetwood Mac and Prince. Highlighted many beautiful passages. A few I couldn’t connect with as much. This man loves Carly Rae Jepsen. This took me a while to read, partially because every chapter I was looking up music or history.
