Finished on April 19th, 2022
I have had this graphic novel laying on my shelves for quite a while now and decided to finally pick it up. I finished it pretty quickly, but I'm not really sure what I really think of it. Without giving away any spoilers, I think there's too much going on for one graphic novel. Too many things happening, too many things that the main character is figuring out, which takes away from the story in it's whole - in my opinion. I think these storylines would've been much better if they weren't this packed together into one graphic novel.

Really deeply appreciate how realistic and complicated and messy this is and doesn't have a perfect resolution to everything. Made me tear up at the end.

Absolutely beautiful! The art and the writing are punchy and lush and fun. The juxtaposition of narration/images in flashback scenes is an incredible narrative device and I'm in awe.

It started a little slow and I wasn't sure where it was going at first. Once o started to connect with the character of Amanda, I really got into the story. I thought the story and art were great and I was glad that the author didn't do the cliche thing at wberubforknin the road. It was a cool little stowy and it made my (late blooming) little Bi heart so happy! Now that I've finished it, I'll be adding it to my Pride display at work.

A fantastic depiction of growing up religious, conservative, and queer. I see myself in Amanda, and having such a character made this one of the emotionally moving reads I've had.

The way Venable and Crenshaw combine art and dialogue to show how memories can be twisted was phenomenal and added depth to the story, characters, and energy of the novel.

Not everything was wrapped in a pretty bow at the end, but that's what life often is growing up queer - some things turn out okay, and you just have to cling to them.

this book should come with a huge fucking trigger warning. I was completely blindsided by the (personally very triggering!!) depictions of transphobia and homophobia in this book. It sent me into a tailspin.

If ur cis you’re not allowed to misgender trans people, ever, period. Ever. Not in ur comics, not to make a point. Not to show the history of a character or whatever. You’re not allowed to do it. So fucking don’t. I’m looking at YOU Miss “cis af” venable.

So sweet in the end. I'm so happy for the main character and Sam family to finally be together.

“I can put my invisibility cloak back on and act like I’m not constantly thinking about kissing my female friends”

That just feels like when a straight girl looks at you and says well you’re a lesbian so do you just want to kiss me right now?!…… um no I don’t just want to kiss every girl I see. I may like women but I’m not some horny dude…

This book has characters that are just transphobia and homophobia personified. Also religious trauma…. Um yeah I feel like this book is just stereotypes of “the gay experience”. I was bored.
