Writing is very choppy...most likely poorly translated. The story itself is just ok (had potential) but there was no ending. No "to be continued". You're just left hanging. I wouldn't recommend it.

I was extremely touched and involved by this Norwegian small-town mystery. The setting is rich, the characters are complex, the puzzle is interesting. I find Inspector Sejer not as well developed as some of his suspects, but perhaps I just need to read more Fossum.

This was a page turner from the start. And the funny thing is, is that I don't know why!? It actually starts off rather bland. Nothing crazy happens. Nothing exciting at all. But I guess the narration is what got me. It didn't start getting interesting until probably almost 50 pages in, but somehow I was able to breeze by those first 50 pages. I went into this book blind; not knowing anything about it. I assumed that it was going to be a simple love story. But then with one page turn, it instantly turned into a murder mystery. It's an easier read that still requires you to think about the story and stay present while reading. But it doesn't require too much thought, so it allowed me to be able to relax, which is why I read in the first place.
***SORT OF A SPOILER BUT NOT REALLY***
As a personal preference, the only thing that I hated about the story was that the ending was one of those "open concept" endings. You're left to wonder. Not all of our questions get answered. I'm one of those people who want to be told what to the think by the author lol. So if you're not one of those people, you will have no problem with how it ended. Character development and relationships were wrapped up nicely, too.

Another compelling entry in this excellent psychological suspense/police procedural series set in Norway. A murder of an Indian woman in a small rural town brings in Inspector Sejer to investigate and the inhabitants can not believe it could have been committed by a local. Lots of fascinating characters and motivations.

Not a very mysterious mystery, and not a very detective-focused piece of detective fiction, but for me this was a rather moving piece of Norwegian noir.

At the end of this book, I was quite irritated because there were quite a few loose ends, and the mystery was never fully solved. One character has an accident and is in a coma for the entirety of the book... The entire time, I was waiting for her to wake up and for some information to be shed, but she never does, and it seems like an unnecessary plot element. I really enjoyed the book until I got to the end, at which point I was very dissatisfied.

A mystery without an ending is the definition of disappointment.
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Misogyny
