I've discovered that there is a range of YA, and this boom definitely falls on the younger side of that continuum. That said, the book is well written, and gives the BLM movement a twist of Greek mythology as another way to highlight both the danger POC are in and the power they have when they use their voices.

I was a bit confused at time. I feel like as we got more into the book it was a bit more clear. I loved the social commentary and the descriptions of the injustice in Siren life and black lives and how it perfectly showed what is actually happening in the real world.

3.5 stars for this charming YA novel set in an alternate version of Portland, OR where over-protective parents and MAGICAL POWERS complicate the lives of two Black teen girls. Not gonna lie, I sort of want to live in this world.(Except I could do without all the angst!)

I adored this book. The beautiful cover and promise of fantasy is what drew me in initially, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the fantasy and folklore was used to convey some truths in our world today. Though I am not among the demographic who may relate on a personal level to the truthful themes present in the text, I am grateful for the insight I have been awarded through reading this book. It is heartwarming to think of how many people, who may have chosen this book simply in search of an exciting new read, can be awarded so much more than simply that. I’m really hoping for a sequel to look forward to
