Not amazingly into the artwork: facial expressions are weak, but the story is incredibly frank, touching, and important. I like when these dark, real issues are expressed in graphic novels. This is a very stark and honest look at aging and death.

Touching funny memoir. Doesn't shy away from morbid details, like bedsores to the bone. Made me examine my thoughts on hospital care and being in a home.

The story of the last years of a couple's lives, based on the struggles and story of the author's own father and stepmother. Particularly appreciated the on-the-ground depiction of the early nineties race riots.

Farmer's illustration style feels very dry, matter of fact, and candid. Although massive amounts of emotion is depicted, personally I felt a bit detached. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

I had a hard time tracking the time on this - there would be a note at the top of the panel saying "January..." or "Next Month" or "The Very Next Week..." but there were MANY of these and I very quickly lost sight of how many years had passed.

What a special book, though. It's a very accessible topic that many people will relate to - one I would use to introduce people to comics.

It's hard to say I "liked" reading a book about a woman caring for her elderly parents. But I'm glad that I read it, because I don't have very much awareness about the hardships of old age. Farmer's parents suffered from not wanting to care for themselves like they used to but also wanting to stay home. I now understand how an older person could go for many months without seeing a doctor for a known medical problem. It was disturbing, but also touching.

Seeing your parent slowly deteriorating with age and illness, until becoming just a shell of their former selves, is a real test in resiliency. My own mother succumbed to cancer in a relatively quick amount of time, but it is still the hardest thing I have gone through in my life so far. Therefore,I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for Farmer to witness her own father and stepmother's last years alive.
