Grimdark AF magical-realist western whose alien landscapes and weird use of prose take you straight up to an alternate reality. It is an aesthetic experience and worth reading... even so I'm not sure I'd actually recommend anyone it. It is that brutal, unpleasant, and alien.

A sustained work of poetry with elemental force. Reads like it was carved out of exquisite rock. This will stay with me for a long time.

Paljon potentaalia, jotenkin en saanut itse kaikkea irti. Tämä pitää lukea uudestaan.

Easily the most violent book I've ever read. And the fact that most of the stuff in here actually happened turns my stomach. Brilliant story and brilliant writing, can't recommend this enough.

Wow, I'm not sure entirely what to say. I like a dark, grim read but this is dialled up to 11 by Mccarthy. I feel like I need to take up a literature course to understand all of the hidden contexts and meanings, and I say that in a good way.
Blood Meridian feels very much like the Odyssey in it's poetic descriptions of a hauntingy beautiful land that is as hostile as the men inhibiting this world. The violence is both graphic, and yet matter of fact which makes it feel all the more real.
I tend to struggle with books that don't use a lot of punctuation like commans and quotation marks, but the character dialogue beautifully mixes together in a sort of melange - adding to both the mystery and confusion of several scenes. Who is saying what, and does that even matter? Even the segments in Spanish (which I didn't understand) added to this sense of being in an alien world.
The last two chapters in particular have had me up all night trying to make sense of it. I actually think it turns the whole book on it's head - adding yet another darkly rich layer. It was like some forbidden Gnostic knowledge has been unlocked - I understood *everything* that happened, and yet *nothing*.
It is not an easy, and I found myself after every chapter going 'oooft I need a break', but it was so worth it. This will stick with me for a long time.
Absolutely stunning!
