Why did this book feel like it was 900 pages? The back and forth of the political conflicts, battles, and just navigating trust/distrust among compatriots got complicated.

I was sad but unsurprised to see the loss of Ragnar just as things were going (potentially) well. Though I think the toughest scene was actually Sevro's death so soon after the wedding. I was ironing my laundry as I listened and started swearing as that whole scheme played out.

I'm left feeling the same as the end of The Poppy War trilogy. It feels final yet unfinished. I love Darrow and Mustang. The conclusion of Cassius and Darrow's relationship is satisfying. I'm not sure I agree with how Mustang handled everything. But at least most.of the big bads are dead.

“But my friends have breathed love into me, breathed my faith back into my bones. They’ve made me want to live”

This is ultimately a story about love, and what you will and can do to take care of those that you do love. This first trilogy has effected me so deeply and I will never forget how it made me feel. Darrow, Sevro, Cassius, and many other characters will not leave my head soon.

I can’t recommend this series enough. And I can’t wait to continue on with the continuation series.

Good and solid series. Never elevates to Great SciFi and is stronger in the Fantasy and adventure role but the transparency in the writing style works in the book's favour making it entertaining and drawing you through the plot.
