Ah yes, the Catholics. Growing up with Catholics, it’s just like that.

Wonderful book. The story opens during WWII with an upper class British officer reminiscing about his days at Oxford where he became acquainted with another student and began a tight (almost obsessive) friendship. The story continues with his eventual interest in the friend's family, especially his older sister. The story brings up themes of friendship, addiction, ruin, religion, sin, marriage, duty, scandal and growing older against the back drop of England from the late 1920's through 1940's. Evelyn Waugh is a true writer. He displays here his ability to describe the human experience of the time which transcends era and culture to relay timeless experience. The book has many challenging vocabulary words that I had to look up--such a fun challenge! Highly recommended.

I liked this but wanted to like it more. None of the characters were appealing. Sebastian was endearing in the beginning but that didn't stick. My copy of the book has the 1980s cast on the cover so I imagined Anthony Andrews in the role of Sebastian and in my mind he was perfect (I haven't seen the series). I watched the 2008 movie when I finished the book and was disappointed in Sebastian's casting (Julia's too). And why did Charles not have any children in the movie? Were they just trying to make him more likeable??

Short: I loved it and I now count it as one of my favourites.

It's hard to write something without including too many spoilers. It started off as a wonderful romantic story, set in an aristocratic environment, containing a homosexual love. But then several layers were added, including religion and it sort of became the demise of a family, written in a fantastic nostalgic style.
