Gave “The Remains of the Day” vibes to me, and I also didn’t like that one…

Catholicism: the great killer of creativity and nuance. Conform and embrace misery and pious deprivation or burn eternally!

This book was not my thing subject-matter-wise. But the writing really was so very good.

I won't summarize or analyze--it's been done by others, much more articulately than I could manage. What struck me most about this book was a feeling I get from a lot of British literature and films set in the 19th-mid 20th centuries: a sense of suppression, almost suffocation. As I write that, I think well, duh, stiff upper lip and all that British nonsense. British or no, this sense is definitely not out of place in a story in which homosexuality is so important. The narrator almost emphatically forbears to mention any homosexual thoughts that may be going through his mind--perhaps even evading such thoughts altogether. In repressing all consideration of this topic, the narrator makes himself a flat, empty character, recounting a series of events that make one a bit uncomfortable, but don't make one cry: after all, the narrator himself doesn't seem to care too much, either.

Still not articulate. Damn.

Catholic didacticism at end is a bit silly

BORING, BORING, BORING. It was SO incredibly hard to get though and ending was bad. Sorry to those who enjoyed this book, but it was greatly disappointing. I read online it’s supposed to be a conversion book??? Nope we barely got any of that until the very end. Do not waste your time on this, I had to force myself to read this. Hated Charles, the only good character was Julia. Almost DNF

Fantastic.
