I read this as it was one of the inspirations for the film Saltburn, this book is more concentrated on the high society aspect and focusing in on one family. The protagonist becomes friends with a member and quickly becomes part of their world. I enjoyed the book overall although unsure I would be quick to recommend. Maybe it was just not what I was expecting?

Exciting to see - if not quite the birth - the burgeoning development of 20th century prose through this slippery little Catholic's vision board.

I think he pondered this book greatly and included much of himself. It is a means to an end, but a well considered and reasoned one, whether I agree with him or not.

Library book!

Took me ages to get through.

The first part was much more enjoyable than the last two. I felt as though we spent a long time with the wrong characters, especially in the second half. I just kept wondering what Sebastian and Cordelia were up to and wishing we could get back to them. I wasn't routing for any of the others and I actively disliked Charles, it's on sight if I ever see you, Charles Ryder.

I could see the influence on Saltburn and that was definitely interesting. It was well written. I was surprised to learn that it was supposed to be making a case for Catholicism because it seemed to be doing the absolute opposite. A mixed bag, basically.
