This is a beautifully written, powerful book. Each section - Saigon, At Sea, Alabama, and From Now On - was fantastic in its own right and really gives a good sense of what's going on in Ha's life and how she feels about it. Ha won't be leaving me anytime soon.

there was definitely a very well-set emotional appeal in this book. i think the poetry was also a clever choice and an interesting way to tell the story.

This book is filled with beautiful simple verses describing a family’s time as refugees from Vietnam during the Vietnam war. It is a simple and eye opening read highlighting a the struggles of leaving your home for something entirely unfamiliar. This is a great classroom read.

Enjoyed the free verse format of this text. The narrator's voice is so engaging and I had so much empathy for her as I read about her journey to the United States. I think that this text would be easy for reluctant readers due to the sparse text on each page, but students may need additional background knowledge about the Vietnam War to truly comprehend the historical context of events.
