One of my absolute favorites growing up. I can still hear my mom saying, "Bonjour, Happy Lion!" :)

An underappreciated classic. This is one of my all time favorite children's books. I was thrilled when they re-published it because my childhood copy was misplaced some years ago. I may love it so much because of the memory of my dad reading it to me as a child. When he did the Happy Lion sounded a bit like John Wayne....still does if I pick it up and read it now.

The storyline is lovely, the illustrations charming (in an old-fashioned way) - but it just feels wrong in this day & age to have a "Happy Lion" living in such a sparse, solitary zoo enclosure. The French setting would fascinate students, much in the way [b:Mr. Chicken Goes to Paris|22115592|Mr. Chicken Goes to Paris|Leigh Hobbs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1551490161l/22115592._SX50_.jpg|7012237] does, but the animals in captivity element gives me mixed feelings about the book.

I have mixed feelings, in part because of the fact that the lion is happier in a zoo than in DANGEROUS AFRICA. But this is clearly a sign of the time in which it was written. The story is cute anyway.
