Fun illustrations almost make up for the rude writing. Is Mommy nice or mean? Tall or short? Pretty or ugly? The child always picks the rude option. Mom is old, messy, ugly, boring, and short.

You know what? I didn't hate it and I actually thought it was pretty cute and in good humour. My children don't need to adore me every second of their lives. I do agree that while the illustrations are great for storytimes, the story itself is not. Maybe I don't perceive it as offensive but others will and we don't want that.

A poem insulting your mother.

I don't like it.

Ha! You mean I don't have to be pretty and young and neat to be loved by my sometimes-boring, sometimes-mean, sometimes-messy children? Good to know - and I'm sure they'll be happy to learn that the reverse applies too, which is surely the point of this book :)

Sorry but no.
Interesting that in early Goodreads reviews some men like it, but no women.

As soon as I saw the word "ugly" I knew people were going to have a problem with this book. I'm fine with it, though, because the message is that even though your mom is imperfect, you love her anyway.

This book....the PreK kids I read it to immediately picked up on the negative choices. I’m not sure I really liked that...I thought it was a bit funny myself (but I’m terribly sarcastic), but I must say I agree with some of the other reviewers who are concerned about the tone.

I gave it 2 stars, almost 3, because I GET the humor, and I can appreciate the "irreverent" mom is loved-no-matter-what, etc. message presented in this book. I think some of the language is harsh; words like: "ugly, mean, boring, etc", but those are the real life words & concepts kids tend to be taught to describe mundane discomforts. No? Obviously both moms and kids love each other no matter how they are labeled during their specific mood disturbances, and all is forgiven and love prevails, which seems to be the gist of this one. Maybe it wasn't as clever as it set out to be, but I got it. I would say it's basically okay, maybe the humor is too basic for my taste, but I can see why people are turned off by the language.
