Whoa! Things are really picking up, and I'm eager to see when Darren finally learns who the Vampaneze Lord is (CURSE YOU MOVIE FOR SPOILING THAT! My friends were pissed it spoiled me and now I'm annoyed too). I enjoyed seeing Darren's growth, mental, emotional, and... Physical? That was unexpected! I loved the new characters, and seeing the war playing out, though I wish we saw more of the actual war. It's similar to Hunger Games with the MC being the only voice, and not always being the best voice to see the whole world. And yet, so addicting! Love Darren!

It’s been a few years since I read the previous six manga versions of Darren Shan’s books. It is interesting to see how Arai has taken a story I know so well and converted it into a manga. I think that it is done really well; most of the dialogue seems to be taken straight from the book. There are a few noticeable changes, but they are understandable in that some things will have had to have been cut out as a manga is shorter than a book.
It is also interesting to see how Arai has drawn the characters, as everyone will imagine them differently. In my opinion he has done a good job of giving faces to the characters. In the guide to the volume at the end Arai notes that he found the drawing of Evanna to be particularly difficult until Shan gave him some tips. The result is horrid, but that’s the point. Even so I can’t say that I like the way she’s drawn, but I can appreciate how well it matches Shan’s description of her in the book, right down to the extra-long finger nails. The only character whose image in the manga I don’t like is that of Mr. Tiny. He looks really creepy and weird, which again is probably the point; however I always imagined him a bit smarter.
I always forget that so much time passes in-between the books, especially as Darren barely ages. Volume 7 is set six years after Volume 6, during which Darren has remained in the mountain taking on the duties of a Vampire Prince and he even retook the trials.
I think that Arai has done a good job with this volume.
