Burying Water by K.A. Tucker

I blame the lack of emotions I feel recently on medication (yes, I’m blaming them).
I feel like my ability to feel things just…isn’t the same – either that or I’ve just read too many books that it’s gotten harder and harder to be emotionally impressed.
One thing I admire about Burying Water is the main character’s strength and determination to survive and most past what has happened to her. You really can’t know how you’ll act or feel in her position, but Water Fitzgerald moves on, and when she does, it’s only then that she figures out who she was.

This isn’t a typical love story. It’s more about pain, loss, and the determination to survive.

After waking up in a hospital and being labelled as a Jane Doe, Jane remembers absolutely nothing about her past or who she is, not even her real name. After recovering from the terrible trauma she faced mentally and physically, she finds a home with her estranged hospital neighbour and is forced to start over. Jane becomes close with the family of the Doctor that operated on her and spends time with them almost like family while fighting the urge to get close to their son, Jesse who is apparently a bad seed.
Before she was Jane, and then became Water Fitzgerald, Jesse knew her as Alex.
She was trapped in a life she had no business being in and he’d fallen in love with her knowing full well how dangerous it was. No matter what happens, he’s determined to save her, even if it means putting his life at risk.
Love will Endure, at least that’s what he hopes.

I really wish I could feel more for this book than I do now, but it just feels really hard to put thoughts into words. I really feel like I should feel more for a story like this – how touching and also how powerful it is.

The Romance isn’t what attracts the reader, but the story of Water’s survival and her will to continue on living. What also got me was the mystery behind her character – obviously as the reader we know who Water is but waiting for the character and the two stories to come together is part of the suspense.

Burying Water is told in past and present style of writing, alternating voices between Jesse in the Past and Water in the Present. The most enjoyable part for me was seeing how the past bleeds into the future and how very small things can trigger your memory at a subconscious level.

The first of the Burying Water series, I thought was exceptionally well-written and a credit to author K. A. Tucker’s talent. It is very deep and full of a woman’s strength and courage. Of course having someone like Jesse helped too, but he let her figure it out on her own and gave her a chance to become her own person.

K.A. Tucker has done it again! If you were a fan of the Ten Tiny Breaths series then you are going to enjoy this book.

Similar to TBB, the plot is complex and the story line is quite twisted. Some parts feel a bit too wild to be true but make for excellent entertainment value. The novel tackles many difficult issues and presents them in an appropriate way. I really appreciated the duo pov, Jesse's from the past and Water's from the present. The novel coincides perfectly between these two views making the ending truly satisfying.

I felt very neutral towards both Water and Jesse, they were enjoyable to read but I was not in love with either of them. Water was a good heroine, extremely easy to root for.

The storyline that was my favourite to read was between Water and Ginny. Tucker knows how to write a secondary character and my heart has such a soft spot for Ginny. Learning about her backstory and watching her develop throughout the novel was a treat.

Although I enjoyed this novel, the twist about the identity of Water felt too predictable and was revealed too early. It felt at times that the book dragged on because I was waiting for the truth to finally be revealed. I also struggled to see the connection that Water and Jesse had outside of anything physical and pure availability.

I think romance suspense is my favourite genre and this was a great small town story. I loved the characters.

My Review:

Wow. I have no words for how amazing, beautiful, emotional, dark, and wonderful this story was. It tore my heart up yet made me cry tears of joy. K.A. Tucker knows how to tell a story that'll grip your heartstrings.

Tucker is by far one of my favorite authors and so far, she hasn’t let me down yet. Burying Water showed just how amazing she is and how she can create a story that will break your heart but also melt your heart. The aspect I enjoyed out of everything was the intense factor of emotion this book represents and brought out in me. By the first few pages, I was already wiping tears away.

Water is one of the most emotional, damaged, but strong individuals I have ever encountered while reading. Losing her memory and waking up to not knowing who you are, not even your own name, has to be one of the hardest things to ever go through, especially with the circumstances that led her to be in that state. But I admired her because she kept pushing forward, trying to not only make herself better but she ended up helping others as well.

I instantly felt for Jesse. The decisions he makes usually never turn out how he wants them, even if they are with the best of intentions. This led him to being a bit rough around the edges. Despite that, Jesse is a very kind and sweet guy. One who would go out of his way to help those he truly cares about.

The characters, each and every one, really held an intense aspect about them. Water’s life was never easy and Jesse always seemed to find himself in bad situations no matter what he did. But the intensity and chemistry between them was undeniable and very intense. The pull between them cannot be ignored! I loved the development and the growth they both faced and they were by the end of the book. I also ended up enjoying nearly every side character in the book. And Ginny, I couldn’t get enough of that cantankerous woman.

The pacing flowed nicely and everything unfolded at just the right points. And though you know most of the story, a few things did take me by surprise – though I did figure out a few things. The book is also plays out in flash backs switching between POVs. One wouldn't think that having a different character explain the past while another one shows the future would make the story really intriguing, but Tucker did a brilliant job handling that. And going in, you do know what happened to Water. That also didn’t stop the dread or the heartbreak. I felt it made the story that much more intense.

This was such an emotional book. Deep, beautiful, dark, and very much gritty, definitely not for the faint of heart, but it’s also a very heartwarming love story about finding oneself, overcoming the obstacles life throws at you, and finding your place in the world.
