The slow suspense in the beginning was well paced. Pulls a reader in and makes them question on what’s going on. Folklore and cultural meaning plays heavily as a sacred promise is broken between hunter and prey. The hunters didn’t have respect for their prey just mindless slaughter and the spirits seek justice and slowly twists into revenge as innocents are caught in the crossfire.

Typically I can read a book in 1-4 hours, depending on the length. This book took me two days to read. I had to keep setting it down, out of sheer frustration with the beginning of the novel.

There was such a disconnect between the first little snippet, and then the perspective shifting. It frustrated me not to have a solid explanation for the characters paranoia - there were a few references to 'a event', but nothing truly solid, unless I completely missed it? It wasn't until I got to the last segment of the book where it switched to the events on the Reservation, that I was actually able to enjoy the book, and the events of the story really started to make sense for me.

Maybe this will be a book that I will go back to and re-read sometime soon...

I found the interconnected stories of this group fascinating, observing how each trauma and misfortune seamlessly flowed into the next. I have been trying to finish this for the last year, picking it up and setting it back down, but I'm glad I persisted because the slow-burn horror Jones creates is delicious. By the end, I was horrified at how scary an elk can be.
