“People shut their eyes to a distant tragedy saying there’s nothing they could do, yet they didn’t stand up for one happening nearby either because they’re too terrified. Most people could feel but didn’t act. They said they sympathized, but easily forgot. The way I see it, that was not real. I didn’t want to live like that.”

easiest five stars. i cried like a baby MULTIPLE TIMES. this story was beyond moving and heart-wrenching. it’s a story about patience, towards yourself and towards others. it’s a story about friendship, family dynamics, love, loss… ugh its just so good! Truly such a fulfilling piece of work.

super quick read and thought provoking. the short chapters make it super easy to get through and this book finally got me out of my reading slump. i also really enjoyed the more detached writing style.

the last chapter was unnecessary in my opinion and felt like a forced nice ending.

some people said it felt like it has “magic cure” vibes but i didn’t really get that from anything that happened (except maybe the conversation that his diagnosis may be wrong from dr. shim.) gon & dora create complexity in yunjae’s life but his relationship with them never cured him or attempted to. he was faced with the emotions & interpersonal complexities his mother and grandmother aimed to help him understand but didn’t have their system of support. also he was almost totally isolated when his family was around because they made up his meaningful interpersonal relationships so i don’t think it’s necessarily fair to attribute a “magic cure/all he needed was love” trope to the whole of the novel.

but i do feel like yunjae’s disorder was used to uplift gon’s character development a little bit and his relationship with dora was incredibly rushed and did have the beginnings of a “love cures all” thing going which i wasn’t particularly fond of.
