Two dominant female main characters, a missing person and murder mystery, shape shifters and vampires are all components for a recipe I want to follow every time. Hence having read this 5 times and fully intending on reading again in the future.

This is definitely one of my favorite stories but the audiobook is not the way to enjoy it for me. The narrator has a nice voice for reading but when she reads the dialogue she overacts big time and it really takes me out of the story.

I always love a good werewolf tale and this book does not disappoint. A book with witches, vampires, and werewolves with the hint at more supernatural creatures I look forward to the next installment of the series (at current there are three). But this is not just a paranormal romance but a mystery as well.

Meet Kassandra, aka Kass who was on the police force till a werewolf incident three years ago, since then he ben a PI and Paranormal Investigator. Now comes to a brutal murder that points to a werewolf being involved (apparently werewolves can change on days other than the full moon but must change at the time of the full moon as well), one with a mean bite.

Then comes Rosalin a werewolf who is looking for her brother who has suddenly vanished. She is a part of the ack but doesn't want her pack leader to know because of Shelia is a sadistic pack leader, no the strongest but with the use of others to carry out horrific acts she maintains leadership.

As the investigation continues another murder is discovered. Kass and her friend Rupert go to a goth club, a vampire goth club. That's where she meets the Countess Lenorre. And Lenorre has taken an interest into a werewolf that appears to be an alpha in nature. And Lenorre is willing to help Kass cause she also is working with Rosalin (but the pack, that Rosalin is involved with, must not know). So is Kass's job to investigate the pack without drawing to much attention to tip the pack off.

Pros: Love the world building. Love the werewolf lifestyle that seems fresh that I haven't read before,

Con: Kass seemed to be a bit of everything in regards to some things. A werewolf and a psychic and a witch and part human and can shift into a raven because of goddess power (I didn't really get the whole gist of that other than adding another layer to this layered canvas). The psych aspect could have just been intuition and the witch part didn't seem to come into play so that not really needed (unless it comes out in a later book) Another con is that some of the sex scenes weren't really forced cause it was Kass's inner wolf wanting to engage in the acts but the human side of Kass said no. I just felt a tad bit uncomfortable that Kass's wishes weren't respected.

Overall I enjoyed this book.
I do wish it was longer and had more world building.
The world building it did have was great.

A very nice story of a detective solving a missing persons case, with a good amount of werewolves, Vampires, and goddesses thrown into the mix

It's a book with a very interesting concept, but I think that it fell a bit short due to Kassandra's lack of development. Despite being a first-person narrative, it's actually hard to fully empathize with her or even understand her. The surrounding characters are much more interesting.

But it was still alright to read, it was captivating because the world was interesting enough (with all the werewolves and vampires) and it was very nicely explained.

The relationship between Kass and Lenorre was also very cute, if only it could've had some more development. But a f\f book with werewolves and vampires isn't something that one can come across often so that was a gem in itself.
Really, the biggest issue is the pacing and the lack of character development.

Story is boring and badly written. Not for me.

Did any of you read anything by J. K. Hamilton? I sure as hell did. I was a huge fan of the Anita Blake series as as a teen, but as I got older and the series became less horror, mystery, urban fantasy and more its own pr0n fanfic, I dropped it. And I’m not even mentioning the other issues it had (not like other girls syndrome, I am looking at you).

Still, I loved that Anita, despite being a petite woman, kicked ass even before she become some weird super saiyan necromancer.

Now the reason I’m bringing Anita Blake up, because Kassandra Lyall is almost a carbon copy of her, except already from the start of the series she is an alpha werewolf superwitch. Oh and she is gay and has barely any personality besides “bitchy”.

The whole book basically reads like gay Anita Blake fanfic, except Kassandra doesn’t really get the luxury of getting a deep backstory or depth in general. But at least that’s true for each and every character in the story so it’s not like she’s singled out or anything. 😅

And the story… It would have been cool except the author was more focused on setting up a weak love-triangle which lead to a lame dubcon moment and which never even worked out than deal with the murders at hand. Not to mention that Kassandra is an incredibly bad investigator and was probably a terrible cop as well, the way she just jumps to any sort of definite conclusions without second guessing herself or looking for evidence to support her claims.

And once we finally reach a perilous moment for her, it’s over faster than I could blink.

Still, I was in the mood for a lesbian Anita Blake story and I got exactly that, even if the quality left me wanting. So if that’s what your mood wills, I would say this book delivers, sort of.

It amazes me how this book can use so many cliches and still seem so fresh and riveting. Pennington does not pull any punches; now here's to hoping that the next in the series has more steamy scenes.
