you know how people say, "be kind to your parents, they're living life for the first time too"? this book has that energy, and i loved it. vita's prose captures the feeling of reading a fire; it just envelopes you like a warm blanket and invites you into a reflective world. i read and reread lady slane's meditations on marriage, identity, aging, and the importance of self-awareness. the ending felt like everything was neatly tied up and left me very satisfied and in a thoughtful mood. in a way, this book reminds me of the recent barbie movie—not only because it has feministic undertones—due to its emphasis on understanding one's identity outside of romantic relationships.

This was a delight. What might have been a depressing premise, was in reality so light hearted and gentle. An 88 year old woman finally gets to live as she pleases; she embraces quiet and relative solitude, enjoying the company of a few like minded characters. An ode to the rich inner lives of the oddballs who'd rather just get on with things as they see fit and who refuse to succumb to convention.

Surprising and delightful. Vita Sackville-West is an absurdly skilled writer.
