I have mixed feelings about this book.

On the one hand, I liked the author’s writing style and prose. It was humorous in a dry-witted way that I definitely had NOT expected from a harlequin book. Dialogue was great too. The basic technical aspects were all nailed perfectly.

On the other hand…

Lord. The way this author talked about homosexuality AND transgender sort of rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know. I’m not part of the LGBTQ+, so I might have gotten it all wrong, but I don’t know. I was just not a fan.

And don’t even get me fucking started on Levi.

I don’t know what the author’s goal was with this book. This was a romance book, but how come Levi was a whole ass loser who treated Faith like garbage the whole book?

One or two times he did ‘something’ that supposedly showed us how much he cared about her, but like.. that’s it? And they didn’t even once TALK to each other and bond? Whenever Faith tried to have a normal genuine and real convo with him, he always shut her down and clammed up. Fine. Whatever. There is a reason character growth exists. BUT WHERE WAS HIS CHARACTER GROWTH??? They literally had a ‘final fight’ and Faith literally told him that she didn’t even know who he was because HE NEVER WANTED TO FUCKING TALK WITH HER, then he stormed off and a few weeks later they had a reconciliation… AS HE PROPOSED TO HER???

BRO?? WHAT?? I’M SORRY BUT HOW DID WE FUCKING GET HERE??? I COULDNT EVEN BE SURE IF YOU TWO WOULD BE COMPATIBLE AS A COUPLE, MUCH LESS A MARRIED ONE??? BECAUSE YOU TWO NEVER FUCKING TALKED??? WHAT??? AM I CRAZY??

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD AND THEN THEY HIT ME OVER THE HEAD WITH THE BLATANT TRANSPHOBIA IM ABSOLUTELY HEARTBROKEN.
That being said I can't give it a higher rating than 2 stars even though the rest of the book was good.
I loved love loved the combination of heart-rending angst and comedy. This book had me crying then laughing out loud within minutes. The writing was good. The atmosphere cosy. The characters were funny. I liked the satire (at least I hope it was satire) and the making fun of gay stereotypes. "You can't be gay you play football!"
Jeffrey's motivation of staying together with her for so long pmakes sense. He wanted to be the perfect "straight" son with a family. He was in love with the idea of Faith not Faith herself. I wished it was explored more in the story though. It is a thing lgbt+ people deal with a lot.

Levi was smoking. He was so mean but I like that. Something about me projecting my self hatred onto characters blablabla. Lol. BUT the flip from him seemingly despising Faith to loving her was so sudden to me. It wasn't really explained. It just kind of happened. I was waiting for that whole delicious silently pining towards our oblivious heroine. Make him suffer for a bit.
I'm going to try reading more of the author but I am a little hesitant.

This is a really sweet and funny romance. Faith was left at the altar three years ago as the best man at their wedding, Levi, convinced groom-to-be Jeremy that it wasn't fair to marry Faith given that he was gay. Faith left her home town and moved to San Francisco to heal her broken heart. Unfortunately, her taste in men doesn't improve as she eventually dates two more gay men before setting them up with each other. She returns home to do a couple of projects and immediately runs into Levi who is now the Chief of Police. Faith has always felt that Levi did not like her and they struggle to get to know each other. Faith has always felt herself to blame for her mother's death in a car accident as she had a seizure at the time of the accident. Levi helps her to realise she wasn't to blame and they slowly realise there may be more to each other than they first thought.

This was a 2.5 for me, but I think it's one of those things where it's me, not you. I just can't get into contemporary romances (and I'm not a big romance reader), and this one was no exception.
