Thank goodness, when I was adopted in 1966, this wasn't the situation I was in! This historical fiction brought to light some adoption practices that were used in the 1930s and 1940s that just break your heart! I was pulled in from the very beginning, becoming completely absorbed in Rill's and Avery's chapters. I listened to this on audio and sat in my car for the final 20 minutes as the story concluded and the author's notes were narrated. I've now spent the past couple hours digesting the book and researching the true life history of Georgia Tann and the Tennessee Children's Home Society.
The author, Lisa Wingate, does an absolutely amazing job of weaving in elements of history with a wonderful and rich storyline, making the reader not want to miss a word along the way. Highly recommended, and worthy of 5/5 stars from me!

Fantastic writing. This book was pulling at my heart strings and really made me feel for the children at the orphanage and all they must have endured.

A wonderful heart wrenching story of history of baby farms in the early 20th century in America and the ultimate power of love and family. Fantastic on audio.
