Agatha and Pillover’s story…finally!

This book was absolutely wonderful! If you are familiar with the Parasolverse you will find so many hidden clues. While it does technically stand alone, I highly recommend reading at least some of Gail’s other books first (especially the Finishing School series). It covers such a broad period of time and so many wonderful characters. All I can say is this book made me very happy. Thanks Miss Gail!

I almost never like books that back-and-fill around other books in a series, but this one did it beautifully, and may be my favorite of Carriger's steampunk era works. Utterly lovely.

This is a much different book than most romances I've read. Instead of focusing on a few months and a solid Happily Ever After, this book follows a couple through a lifetime of unconventional choices that place stress and strain on them as individuals and as a couple. They weather these challenges together in a way that is surprisingly (for a series with a slightly humorous fantasy/steampunk bent) realistic.

The book is also much less overtly fluffy and humorous than most of the previous series' to which it is related. The change in tone is striking but works well for the characters and the unusual approach.

The writing is up to the usual excellent standards, and includes some hilarious, insightful, and striking passages.

I've loved Pillover ever since he was first introduced in Etiquette and Espionage, and he was worth the wait. Agatha is much harder to relate to and appreciate, but, like a certain object she is compared to in the book, she has striking layers and a self-contained certainty that is strangely compelling.

I read this book through in a day because I couldn't really bear to put it down, and I'll be thinking about it for a long time to come.

I absolutely loved this. Very slow paced compared to other Carriger stories, and very effectively so. I adore Agatha and Pillover and I adore them together.

"Affection was not a disguise for obligation. Love just eas, and sometimes it drifted about the world on a dirigible and sometimes it waited paitently in the rain."

An ending?

Of all of the stories this one was the most melancholy. It felt like an ending. Bittersweet but deeply satisfying.

Also HAH! I KNEW IT.

Completionists gather around! This was not my favorite outing from Ms. Carriger, but I still had a good time. I enjoyed the way that she wove the trials and tribulations of The Wallflower in and out of other intelligencer stories. Proving that Agatha really just might be the best asset of them all! May everyone have a Pillover waiting and keeping the fireplace lit.

Solid story.  Now I want to read the other books again, but also re-read this one to match the timeframe in the other books.  Maybe that will be a project for next year.

This book is even better than I had anticipated. Having read the other books set in this world I knew to expect great things. I was however not prepared for how absolutely perfect this story was. It is told as memories and it fits the storyline so well, both of them looking back on their lives and the choices they've made. Agatha is amazing but anyone who reads this will fall head over heels for Pillover. The romance in this story is a lot more unassuming than most of the other novellas but there is no denying it's there. This book made me laugh and made me cry (both happy and sad tears) and I can guarantee I will read it all over again in the very near future. I would 100% recommend this book.
