A nice book, the heavy accents are a bit hard to read at first but I soon got interested in the story. At first it seems glum, Bet lives in the slums of Liverpool with her drunken father, devout dying mother and twin brothers. Before her mother dies she promises to look after the boys. She falls in love with a sailor named Will, but when her father tries to separate the two it becomes difficult for her to look after the boys. This book focuses very much on promises. Although it may seem a bit melodramatic, the friends of Bet and Will become a main feature of the book, and how they are helped by them is very heart-warming.
