I love that this predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula (which I also love!!), it’s so interesting to see the differences in the vampires. How they are made, how they live, how they die, etc. Beautiful story.

Such beautiful prose, I can see why it was such an inspiration to later vampire novels. My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed and almost like a clinical retelling as if Laura was detached from it, which I'm sure was purposeful but didn't feel like the climax the book was building up to. I wish it was more of a complete novel instead of a short novella, I would have loved to get more of Carmilla's backstory, maybe told to Laura from Carmilla's own perspective (instead of just having the snippets we get from the Baron's perspective) as well as a more thought out ending that wrapped up the story with a bigger climax and more detail and maybe with a twist at the end we wouldn't have seen coming. Maybe one day someone will write a more complete version.

A nice quick read, at times I found it difficult to make sense of the language but that is likely down to my lack of intelligence rather than bad writing. I liked the fast pace of the book and how the story progressed, also - Lesbian vampire?! Hell yeah!

Camilla is creepy and charming in equal mesure. However, I found the ending anticlimactic.

If your dear heart is wounded, my wild heart bleeds with yours.

I have been in love with no one, and never shall, unless it should be with you.
