If you haven't read this book, read it! It was seriously fantastic, and I sincerely hope Rae writes another story soon! :) I couldn't put it down, I wanted to do nothing but read, and I don't mean like I always do, but I wanted to know more, read more, be part of Elisa's story! It was happy and sad and scary, and action packed, and most of all wonderful! Truly a wonderful story!

3.5 stars. Audiobook: great narrator. Story was good but a little slow in the beginning. I didn't start liking the main character until half way through.
The first book was ended well and no real cliffhangers. Could have been a standalone. I did get sick of hearing "God knows what's best. God knows what he's doing. I trust in God." Then all of a sudden she had come into her own and I realized I had started to like her when she learned to get angry and stop crying. We will see what the second has in store.

I first read this book when I was in middle school and enjoyed it because the main character was fat and rarely did I read books with any characters like that.
I still enjoy that aspect of the book, however I wasn’t crazy about how people weren’t always nice to her until after she lost weight.

Overall I enjoy the plot and the world building within the book, besides that earlier small detail, it’s a great book!

I really like this book for its characters. Especially the main character, Elisa. The book does not have the most captivating and original plot but it draws you in through the fascinating and well-developed characters. Elisa is one of the strongest female protagonists in any story ever. She is not physically strong but is very well educated and makes amazing decisions. She has a natural ability to captivate people and make them listen. There are many fantasy and YA books with strong female characters. Elisa is by far one of the strongest because she does not need physical power to defeat her enemies.
The story and plot for the first book are a little disappointing. The action and intrigue do not really pick up until the very end of the book. I understand that it is a part of a trilogy and that it does not necessarily have to have its own story arc but it still is a little too easy to put down and stop. The only reason I continued reading was that someone told me the trilogy got better with the second and third books. That's the thing about this book. By itself, it isn't very good. But the rest of the trilogy is amazing. If you finish this book and are not sure whether to continue, let this review be the reason you do. The second book is SO AMAZING that you forget how disappointing the first one is. Definitely finish the series because as a whole, it's awesome.
