Mad Honey was unexpected and wonderful. It is difficult to read at times, because it is honest and raw. It will possibly challenge you, but in a way that everyone would benefit from. It is a book that will leave a lasting mark on me, and I would definitely recommend others to read.

This was really good overall. Warning that it’s SUPER LONG and at times I felt a little too science-y. The plot was so good that it made up for it!

At first I was very interested in the plot of this book and the murder trial, and was really unsure of where it would go. However after the major plot twist halfway through the book, I felt like so many pages and so much time was devoted to just discussing what it’s like to be trans and Lily’s transition. I don’t feel like it was all necessary to include, and going from not speaking about Lily being trans to only talking about just that for chapters and chapters felt abrupt and it distracted too much from the actual plot of the book. I also felt like with all this filler, it read as more of an effort to just sound woke and trendy. I also didn’t love the final plot twist, and felt like there were better, more interesting options rather than having the killer be who it actually was. The final plot twist also felt very rushed, kind of came out of nowhere and I don’t like how nothing really came of it. With all that being said, the book did hook me in and I had a hard time putting it down, hence the 3 stars.

This book… how do I describe this book…. It started off really strong, but quickly began to go downhill faster than a cyclist on a mountainside that then finally catches themselves and comes to an abrupt stop.

I understand keeping up with the times, but the way things are presented or described in this book can be overbearing at times. I actually have a distant family member who is trans male. This book did make me think deeply about what he may have gone through prior/during transition. Otherwise, I just did not enjoy the way the book was written overall. The two timelines running opposite was frustrating. I only began to appreciate it once the story was finally wrapping up. Even then it just feels incomplete. I feel as though it had potential to be great but never quite fulfilled the promise.

I know I am part of the minority of disliking this book, but practically my entire book club also dislikes it as well. Do with that what you will.

Had me captivated, and my emotions all over the place. That’s the sign of a good read :)
