In City of Stone and Silence, the book is split in alternating chapters. In one storyline, we follow Isoka immediately after the events of book 1. In the other, we follow her sister Tori. I compared the first book to The Maze Runner, and surprisingly, you can compare Isokaโ€™s storyline to that bookโ€™s sequel The Scorch Trial with surprise zombies and something else I wonโ€™t mention because itโ€™s a spoiler. Isoka continues to be a great character, but we just donโ€™t get the chance to get to know her even more because she only gets half the book (unlike book 1). As for Toriโ€™s storyline, I wanted to like it, but itโ€™s a bit unbelievable the things that happened especially with how fast everything is going. And I just donโ€™t buy into how tormented she is in her own mind. I did like Garo though. Still, City of Stone and Silence is an entertaining YA read, but it falls a bit short of its predecessor.

This world is so fascinating and I loved the addition of Tori's story in this installment. I'm super curious what happens in the next book and how everything ties up.

My only question after finishing this second book is who in the world are these girls parents. Because two over-powered siblings seems entirely unfair.

Alright spoilers aside, I did enjoy this book, though for some reason not as much as the first. This book is written in alternating chapters between Isoka on the Soliton and Tori on the mainland. I found it hard at times to switch back and forth so quickly, but I definitely was more drawn to Toriโ€™s story in this book and felt myself wanting to rush through Isokaโ€™s. Itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t like Isokaโ€™s side, but I just found it a little more predictable and not as captivating. Definitely felt like I got a chance to learn more about the lore and magic of this world though in the second book, which I appreciated. Still very confused on the island magic thoughโ€ฆ

Looking forward to the interesting reunion about to happen in the third for sure! And what about Garo

First off, I binge-read this book. And considering I did the same to the first book, I don't remember as much as I thought. However, this book relays information well, and it wasn't difficult catching up. And it picks up immediately where we left off.

City of Stone and Silence goes from Isoka to Tori's POV, and I found this pacing was done fairly well with highs and lows. It was interesting seeing Tori grow and change as a character and coming into her own now that Isoka is missing.

It was a good parallel- as Isoka (still selfish and stubborn) learns to lead a people, we see her sister starting to do anything she needs to do to find her sister. It's a great little back and forth, and the tension feels more about survival. I would like to have seen more tension between characters emotionally, but maybe they all have to depend on each other to make it through the book.

I don't think there was as much action as the first book, and the antagonist feels like this generic evil guy that's just obsessed with himself, and it's been done before. But that also makes him easy to hate, so take what you will from it.

The magic system is so interesting, and I love that some questions were finally answered. Bring on the magic! Down with the Draft! (also, undead dinosaurs?)

Overall, it was a satisfying binge-read, and I can't wait to see what #3 brings. I just have to wait. *sighs*
