At first, I thought this was going to be an awesome and eerie read. While it had the creepy and dark story I was craving at the moment, it didn't reach the awesome that I was looking for. It touches on many subjects including murder, racism, sacrifice, and cruelty. Usually, this could make for a deep and dark read, but the characters irritated to the point to where I almost didn't finish this book.

Brenna was the most obnoxious and irritating girl in this book and she was the main character. I couldn't stand her from the beginning, she pushed my buttons in the middle, and she still was on my last nerve at the end. I just couldn't bring myself to like her character.

White Bird, while at times could have been great, he is in la-la land for most of the book. He had the potential of saving this book, but there wasn't much of him in a normal state of mind to enjoy.

Again, while some people might enjoy the angst of the deeper emotions and plot, I was not a fan of it. I thought the cover was gorgeous, but it didn't help me enjoy the story. Frankly, the only thing that kept me from rating this as a one star was the small scenes of White Bird when he was lucid.

Brenna Nash is in trouble. Her mother has just moved them back to Shawano, Oklahoma, the site where two years ago she was all but accused (but not convicted) of a terrible deed. It's hard enough for Brenna to live with what she saw her then-boyfriend White Bird do, but the residents of Shawano certainly aren't going to cut her any slack. However, with strength she wasn't sure she possessed, Brenna go to visit White Bird, re-living that horrible night and the days leading up to it. But if bringing so much pain to the surface reveals the truth, it may be worth it after all.

This is a rather dark book. Really. Brenna is very moody and her angst spills off every page. It pained me to watch Brenna go through such torture from the other kids without being able to stand up for herself. But it was nice to read scenes from her mother's POV as well, because the reader saw how Brenna's mom really was trying to help. There is a light paranormal element throughout the story, but for the most part it is all reality. Jordan Dane has thought closely about her characters and their actions, and it shows through in the dialog especially. I must admit that the first half of the book was pretty intense, even for me. Readers who stick it out past the brutal scenes will be rewarded with a much more mellow second half, as well as answers to all of their questions. A surprising read and a worthy journey.

I received this book courtesy of Amazon Vine.

Our main character, Brenna Nash, was 14 when she stumbled upon her best friend and almost boyfriend kneeling of the dead body of a fellow classmate. Brenna turned in the boy she called White Bird but it didn't save her from being implicated in the crime herself. There wasn't enough evidence to arrest Brenna but the animosity of the town forces her and her mom to move away. It's now 2 years later and they've returned to the town to settle her grandmother's house after her death. Brenna finds out that White Bird has been in a mental institute for those two years and completely unresponsive. The book is the story of Brenna finding the strength in herself to discover the truth of what happened and try to reach her friend.

Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of this one. I never connected with this story or the characters. Brenna is a nice enough girl who happens to see dead people but I couldn't get into her skin enough to be rooting for her. I never felt like I could relate to her. The only connection I really liked was the growth between Brenna and her mom. Brenna felt like her mom betrayed her by letting the Sherriff railroad her after Heather's death but they finally start opening up to each other and communicating. I wanted to like this book and I know it's gotten solid reviews but it just didn't resonate with me for some reason. I was curious enough to find out who actually killed Heather but that was really the only thing that kept me going.

I'm conflicted, a large part of me hates this book, so many characters were just horrid, but another part of me appreciates the twists and turns and the inclusion of indigenous rep (which from the acknowledgments sounds like she actually spoke with an indigenous someone and did research, but does that actually mean anything, not really).

More thoughts to come later, hopefully, gotta stew this one a bit more.

This book was amazing.
Page turning and had a great story line.
It was exhilarating and devastating all at the same time.
This was an awesome book I would definitely recommend it to a heap of people.
It tells a good story of heart ache, firs love and broken trust.

1.5 Stars.

This was just not what I thought it was. Maybe I missed something but I didn't see any paranormal aspects, except for Brenna's occasional visions of dead people. It was more like a regular crime drama with teenagers. I hated Brenna - she was pretentious, whiny, rude, and I just don't think she was a good friend to White Bird. If they were so close and had such a connection, she wouldn't have just left him to be accused of murder, especially if she truly believed he didn't do it.

Most of the events that happened in the book, as part of the "plot", seemed way too far-fetched and out of left field. I guess if the books was a little longer so it went into detail about the case and everything it would make more sense (not that I want it to be longer after reading). The ending was rushed, Brenna was forgiven, and everything was wrapped up so perfectly.

Not what I expected in any way, and not that's not a good thing.

Oh, this was an excellent book, of being the outsider, and there was mystery and romance, and yeah, really good!
